SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING

Stora Enso is a global forest products company for which sustainability management is an integrated part of its business. They use Oracle's Hyperion Financial Management to integrate their sustainability and financial information. They have been able to follow their group environmental performance targets quarterly, follow their carbon dioxide emission targets for different organizational levels for business performance reasons, and provide proven and qualified sustainability data for external reporting. Winemaker Australian Vintage has set up real-time carbon footprint reporting tools at the request of one of its largest suppliers, Britain's Tesco supermarket chain. The company uses an Oracle product to track its carbon footprint in real-time. Oracle Business Activity Monitoring gives Australian Vintage up-to-the-minute data on its carbon footprint across the supply chain, from the time an order is submitted to when it is executed. GREEN DATA CENTER PRACTICES FOR DATABASE, MIDDLEWARE AND SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) provides power to 15 million people in Northern and Central California. One of its premier energy efficiency programs is the SmartMeter program, a usage-monitoring plan that gives customers detailed rate and usage information to help them understand, manage, and reduce their gas and electric consumption. "We knew we needed to support the data growth created by the SmartMeter program, so we worked with Oracle on creating a scalable clustered configuration," says PG&E IT Director Alain Erdozaincy. PG&E now depends on the Oracle technology stack—including Oracle Database, Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC), and Oracle Grid Control—to run its data center and greatly reduce their energy usage. Generating power from nuclear fusion could become one way to dramatically reduce the carbon footprint. Scientists and engineers at National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF) are using extremely powerful lasers to produce controlled thermonuclear fusion. To manage its business as well as its science, NIF runs Oracle Database 11g with Oracle RAC, Oracle Application Server, and the Oracle content management framework. Read more here.

Standard Parking Corporation reduces their paper consumption by 312 tons using Oracle products, saving 624 tons of trees annually. They use Oracle E-Business Suite applications, Oracle Database, and Oracle Imaging and Process Management to reduce paper consumption, especially for electronic billing, requisitions, and accounts payable processing. They leverage Oracle Portal to create an electronic method for customers to manage their contracts and parking service needs, as well as manage communications and approvals between internal personnel and customers/clients. They also enhanced their efficiency in their procure-to-pay process through the use of Oracle iProcurement, Oracle Purchasing, Oracle iSupplier Portal, and Oracle Imaging and Process Management, with the potential for reducing paper consumption by 200,000 to 400,000 pieces of paper each year, and reducing costs. They worked with Oracle Partner HCL Technologies Limited to deploy the Oracle solutions to meet Standard Parking Corporation's business and environmental goals. Read more here.

InterCall, Inc. uses Oracle WebLogic Server to process more than four billion conferencing minutes each year, helping meet the increasing demand for conferencing as customers look for new ways to reduce travel and their carbon footprint. BT Group has taken big steps to save energy and reduce carbon emissions. The company is one of the largest communications service provders in the UK with data centers around the world. GREEN CONTENT MANAGEMENT

Embry Riddle Aeronautical University reduced their paper usage and greenhouse emissions by half—from 140 tons to 70 tons and from 355,950 pounds to 177,975 pounds respectively, using Oracle products. They implemented Oracle Distributed Document Capture to electronically capture student forms—eliminating duplication and mailing costs. They converted necessary student forms to Web-based formats. "Oracle solutions helped us to promote electronic data sharing, enabling us to reduce waste and decrease annual paper usage from 140 tons to 70 tons." stated Cindy Bixler, Chief Information Officer, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
