What is Pole Holding?
Towards the end of Sean D. Tucker's 15-minute Power Aerobatic routine, we will take 12 brave (or unsuspecting) volunteers
and place them on the runway over which Sean is flying. They will be split into three groups of four people; the groups
will be spaced 750-feet apart. The runway will be exactly 500-feet in front of the crowd. Once at their locations, each
group will raise a set of 20-foot high aluminum poles that have a colored ribbon stretched between them, approx. 60-feet
wide. Sean will first dive down at over 215 mph and stop the Oracle Challenger's descent 5-feet above the runway. He will
take aim at the first ribbon and actually fly underneath it. He will immediately pull up into a maneuver known as the Triple-Avalanche, an inside loop with three snap rolls on top. As he completes the maneuver, he will again accelerate to well over 200 mph and then fly underneath the remaining two ribbons. Shortly after that, he will return to actually slice all three ribbons using the giant 3-bladed composite propeller on the Oracle Challenger. If that wasn't hard enough to do, he is going
to do it in three different flight altitudes! He will once again dive toward the first ribbon, stopping the descent 15-feet
above the runway at 215 mph. He will immediately roll the aircraft into right knife-edge flight, his lower wingtip now
barely 8-feet above the runway. He slices through the first ribbon and instantly rolls the aircraft 180 degrees to left
knife-edge flight and cuts ribbon number two. Finally, he rolls inverted and shreds the third and final ribbon. Just
another day in the office for Sean D. Tucker!
Prior to heading out onto the runway, all of our volunteer Poleholders will be thoroughly briefed by
a member of our Team. A Team member will supervise each group as they perform their Poleholding duties.
Once the show is over and the volunteers have returned to the briefing location, the poles will be
put away and each Poleholder will receive a pin proclaiming them to be members of the "International Poleholder's Union."
