Oracle Chile Employees Plant Hundreds of Trees in Santiago

Consistent with its namesake,Oracle Global Volunteer Days (GVD) had a truly worldwide reach in 2007. Appropriately, Oracle employees all over Latin America ― from Puerto Rico to Chile ― lent their hands to community projects that helped the homeless, improved the environment, and reached out to community youth.

In Chile, 70 Oracle employees volunteered to plant almost 240 trees in Metropolitan Park in Santiago. Volunteers have returned to this park for several years in an effort to help offset carbon emissions. With each tree providing oxygen supply for up to five people, their efforts helped produce an oxygen supply for 1,200 people.

In Brazil, Oracle employees volunteered to spend the day with more than 160 children who live at Gotas de Flor com Amor, a group home for at-risk children. The Oracle volunteers took the children to Toca da Raposa - a special park that preserves animals at risk of extinction – where they participated in a variety of sessions to teach the children about the environment, nutrition, and physical activities.

One hundred Oracle employees volunteered at an institution in Colombia that provides a place to live for girls between the ages of 4-14 who are at social risk. The Oracle volunteers participated in a variety of activities designed to help the girls learn about nutrition, health, and hobbies.

Oracle employees in Puerto Rico donated a day to Iniciativa Comunitaria (Community Initiative), a center that provides food and life skills workshops for homeless adults. The Oracle volunteers assisted in the day’s workshops, which focused on health and hygiene. In addition to the workshops, volunteers distributed toiletries and other hygiene care items, served lunch to the participants, and assisted with a variety of other activities at the center.

Oracle GVD was created to promote volunteerism among Oracle employees, make a lasting impact on our communities, and celebrate year-round service to organizations throughout the world. Oracle GVD is an excellent example of our mission at work. The 2007 event included more than 4,400 volunteers from 37 countries, supporting more than 158 projects.
