February 2008
As part of Oracle Global Volunteer Days (GVD) 2007 in Taiwan, Oracle employees invested 369 volunteer hours over one weekend to organize activities for more than 170 children from the Northern Region Children's Home, an indigenous nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the well-being of underprivileged children in northern Taiwan.
A full-day program in Yilan marked the fourth year that Oracle Taiwan has partnered with the Northern Region Children's Home. Following the 2006 trip to the Yingge Cultural Adventure in Ceramic Arts, Oracle Taiwan employees chose the National Center for Traditional Arts in Yilan as the GVD 2007 venue for another vibrant cultural experience. The children and Oracle employees, together with family and friends, spent the day immersed in Taiwan's traditional handicrafts and performance arts.
“We are very excited and encouraged by the strong turnout for the Oracle Global Volunteer Days 2007,” said Gary Wu, Managing Director, Oracle Taiwan. “This is important and very inspirational because community involvement adds an extra dimension to both the company and each one of us as individuals. This has been another fulfilling volunteer engagement and we look forward to increasing our support for the Northern Regional Children's Home.”
Chaperoned by Oracle Taiwan's team of volunteers, kids from the Northern Regional Children's Home had a day of educational fun at the National Center for Traditional Arts. Wandering through the center's traditional alleys and the Traditional Handicraft Artists' Studios, they gained first-hand experience of sculpture, weaving, painting, collage making, ceramics, and jewelry making. A range of traditional performing arts ‐ including music, folk songs, dance, acrobatics, story telling, drama, and puppet theater ‐ were showcased in the center's Music Hall and Traditional Theater.
Oracle GVD was created to promote volunteerism among Oracle employees, make a lasting impact on our communities, and celebrate year-round service to organizations throughout the world. Oracle GVD is an excellent example of our mission at work. The 2007 event included more than 4,400 volunteers from 37 countries, supporting more than 158 projects.
