Oracle Academy and Delhi Public School Society Host First Training Event in India

Oracle and Delhi Public School (DPS) Society, a non-profit, non-proprietary, private global network of 154 English medium, co-educational, secular schools in 13 countries committed to creating global citizens, recently hosted their first-ever Oracle Academy training event in India, marking the first phase in the Oracle Academy and DPS Society partnership.

The partnership and corresponding training event are designed to prepare teachers to deliver Oracle Academy curriculum to their students to help students prepare for technology careers and higher education. Additionally, the event kicks off a train-the-trainer model for teacher preparation that will help to rapidly introduce the Oracle Academy program into new schools in India.

"Oracle, through its education initiatives like the Oracle Academy, is committed to helping prepare students to take advantage of 21st century technology," said Clare Dolan, Vice President, Oracle Education Initiatives. "We have a strong presence in India and believe that our partnership with DPS Society will allow us to quickly and effectively prepare teachers and students to take advantage of the Oracle Academy's leading technology curriculum."

The Oracle Academy, part of Oracle's Education Initiatives, supports the needs of educational institutions by helping to provide schools, districts, and ministries with the tools required to prepare students for 21st century careers. Students can learn database design and programming skills, as well as vital business skills such as critical-thinking, problem-solving, resume-building and interviewing, group collaboration, and project management—skills used throughout the IT industry in companies around the world.

"Our work with the Oracle Academy is an integral component of a larger strategy to provide cutting-edge competitive skills to the students of Delhi Public Schools," said Narendra Kumar, DPS Society. "I am confident that this academic alliance between Oracle and DPS Society will lead to bringing relevant and realistic changes in the educational scenario in the country."

Twenty-four DPS teachers participated in the initial training in May 2006 at Delhi Public School, Faridabad campus. They took part in the Oracle Academy course, "Database Design and Programming with SQL," led by an Oracle Academy team consisting of professionals from the United States and India.

Teachers are expected to begin teaching the Oracle Academy course in their respective schools once they have completed this phase of training. Upon successful completion of the May event, the DPS Society selected a group of teachers to act as "Super Trainers"—teachers who can provide instruction on the Oracle Academy curriculum to even more teachers and schools, under the guidance of DPS Society.

The Oracle Academy was first introduced to high schools in India in 2004 and currently educates 10,000 students in 15 countries. The program helps participating students to develop database design, programming, project management, presentation, and problem-solving skills. At the same time, participating teachers are supported with world-class training and professional development, and the latest database and online learning technologies. The Academy is one of four education initiatives that Oracle sponsors in support of technology education.
