Oracle China Employees Help Needy University Students

More than 300 employees in Oracle China recently donated more than RMB 61,000 (about US$7,600) as part of an initiative to help 30 less privileged students in five Chinese universities with the financial support they need to continue their studies. The collected funds were presented to the New Great Wall Project under the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation.

The working committee of the New Great Wall Project will review and recommend which students from Beijing University of Technology, Fudan University, South China Normal University, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and Dalian Maritime University will be the beneficiaries of the Oracle employee contribution.

The cash donation, one of the biggest at Oracle China in recent years in terms of scale of participation, represents the continual effort by Oracle China and its employees to support those in need. In addition to this donation, Oracle China employees also have participated in volunteer activities for financially disadvantaged primary school students and disabled children.

“As a participant in the fund-raising activity for the university students, I felt a strong sense of responsibility, participation, and pride,” said Monica Li, Senior Manager, Customer Reference, Oracle China. “I was also impressed by the enthusiasm other employees showed..”

Launched by the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation on September 1, 2002, the New Great Wall Project is designed to help needy university students by providing stipends to meet their basic daily needs, establishing teams to help improve their studies, and finding internship and job opportunities. The project has so far raised more than RMB 80 million (about US$10 million) and benefited 1,800 students in 537 universities across China.

“Giving back to society is part of the Oracle heritage. We are committed to making a difference in the community and have made a substantial impact through our education, volunteer, and other company-led initiatives,” said Roger Li, Regional Managing Director, Oracle Greater China.

Oracle is committed to using our technology and resources to advance education in innovative ways, promote diversity, enrich the life of communities, and protect the environment.

Since Oracle launched our education programs in China in 2002, we have made in-kind donations valued at more than US$200 million in the country. In 2004 and 2006, Oracle China twice received the Outstanding Education Contribution Award from the Chinese Ministry of Education.
