Nanyang Girls High School is the first education institution in Singapore to join the Oracle Education Foundation’s Think.com program, an online educational community that facilitates global collaborative learning.
“The learning environment today is very different from what it was 20 years ago,” said Mak Lai Ying, Principal, Nanyang Girls High School. “Parents and traditional media are no longer the primary sources of knowledge. There is a paradigm shift in how students learn through online peer-to-peer and teacher-to-peer interactions and discussions. At Nanyang Girls High School, we recognize that technology enables our students to boost their learning capacity beyond their school curriculum, as well as develop a broader perspective on global, social and economic issues. Think.com was selected because it provides a trusted peer-to-peer learning environment for our students to engage in global collaborative learning.”
Using Think.com as a platform for discussion and projects, Nanyang Girls High School students will be able to create their own personal Web space within a protected online community. They can exchange email, create Web pages, share photos and videos, and host collaborative learning activities with other Think.com members.
Nanyang Girls High School began trial use of Think.com in July 2006, using the platform to facilitate several school projects and class discussions on issues such as the use of acupuncture in medicine, and the best practices of successful Chinese enterprises.
Following this success, Nanyang Girls High School extended Think.com to its community involvement and overseas programs. In November 2006, one group of students participated in the annual bi-cultural studies program in China. Another group went to Silicon Valley in the United States to visit some of the successful IT companies – including Oracle, where students presented their Think.com e-portfolios to Oracle employees at Redwood Shores.
Both groups shared their experiences, participated in discussion forums, and submitted joint projects with their overseas counterparts using Think.com. The added benefit with Think.com is that the students can continue to interact and learn from their overseas counterparts after the exchange programs.
“We are very excited that Nanyang Girls High School has joined the Think.com community to enhance knowledge transfer, communication, and their curriculum,” said Frank Koo, Managing Director, Oracle Singapore. “Through Think.com’s global community of 300,000 students, the students at Nanyang Girls High School will be able to interact with their overseas counterparts and develop relevant and useful skills in today’s globalized and accelerated world.” |
