As part of Oracle Global Volunteer Days (GVD) 2006, 30 Oracle Singapore employees became a buddy to a child from CARE (Children at Risk Empowerment) on September 30, 2006.
The 30 children and 30 Oracle buddies spent the day at the renovated Singapore Discovery Center and learned about Singapore’s history. Even more important, the Oracle buddies gave individual attention to the children, making a difference in each child’s life.
“My colleagues and I found the outing to be a rare treat for our students,” said Kah Hwee, CARE Singapore. “During the outing, the buddies were very attentive to the students, and it was very heartening to see your colleagues interacting well with our students, some of whom can be quite a handful. I really applaud the efforts on your colleagues’ part to make that day a memorable one. Some of the students even asked us when they could see you all again, and were really interested in the kind of work you all do. You and your colleagues have certainly made quite an impression on our students.”
Here’s what some of the children said during the outing:
“This (the outing) is very fun ... I enjoy the tour around the army camp.” – 11-year-old girl
“Wow, the food here is very nice, I ate so much!” – 10-year-old boy
“My buddy helped me to win this” – 10-year-old boy, referring to the ice-breaker game the children and buddies played
“I like my buddy a lot, she’s very nice and got me so many balloons!” – 9-year-old girl
Developed and managed by Oracle Volunteers, GVD is a corporate initiative created to encourage and support employee involvement within local communities. This year’s event — held from September 16-30, 2006 — saw more than 3,900 Oracle employees work more than 23,000 hours on 133 projects in 37 countries around the globe.
