The Oracle Academy and the Puerto Rico Department of Education have collaborated to launch the first-ever group of Oracle Academies on the island, with 14 teachers participating in the Oracle Academy Instructor Institute. This effort represents the first phase of a multi-stage plan to bring the Oracle Academy to all eligible high schools in Puerto Rico.
The Oracle Academy curriculum, which exposes high school students to a combination of technical and business skills, aligns with the government of Puerto Rico's human capital and economic development goals.
Participating teachers receive training through the Oracle Academy Instructor Institute, a comprehensive training program that includes eight weeks of online training and one week of instructor-led training at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). After successfully completing this training, teachers will begin teaching the Oracle Academy course, "Database Design and Programming with SQL," to their students in fall 2006.
"The Oracle Academy will enable Puerto Rico to further incorporate technology training into its curriculum, increase educational standards, and create new academic and professional opportunities for its students, giving students a competitive edge in the local and global marketplace," said Aurora Roque, who has been appointed as the Oracle Academy's champion for the Caribbean.
Oracle is committed to using our technology and resources to advance education in innovative ways, promote diversity, enrich the life of communities, and protect the environment. We are proud that the same innovative spirit behind Oracle's technological success also drives the creation of innovative global corporate citizenship initiatives that benefit our communities. The Oracle Academy is one example of these initiatives.
