As part of Oracle Global Volunteer Days (GVD) 2006, 22 Oracle Vietnam volunteers spent a day helping the orphans and homeless children living at Trung tam Bao tro Tre em 4 (Children Care Center No. 4) 60 kilometers outside Hanoi.
“Due to rapid industrialization and urbanization of the country, there currently are an increasing number of orphans and homeless children in Vietnam,” said Nguyen Vinh Truong, Oracle Vietnam’s GVD Project Leader. “Trung tam Bao tro Tre em 4 in Hatay province is home to more than 160 children who are orphans, homeless, and even street children. The majority of the children are from Hanoi and neighboring provinces.”
In an action-filled day, Oracle Vietnam volunteers contributed a total of 154 hours to:
Serve meals to 120 children.
Plant four big trees and perform other gardening activities.
Feed 30 infants.
Organize a soccer match for 28 children.
Conduct a drawing/painting contest for 30 children between the ages of 4 -9 years.
The volunteers also donated clothes, socks, notebooks, pens, pencils, and stationery to the children.
“Oracle Vietnam believes that our communinity development activities will help underpriviledged children see the brighter side of their futures,” added Vinh Truong.
Developed and managed by Oracle Volunteers, GVD is a corporate initiative created to encourage and support employee involvement within local communities. This past year’s event — held from September 16-30, 2006 — saw more than 3,900 Oracle employees work more than 23,000 hours on 133 projects in 37 countries around the globe.
