This week Larry Ellison, Chairman and CEO of Oracle Corporation (Nasdaq: ORCL), joined a small group of industry and civic leaders who have been invited to serve as Visiting Professors at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
On Wednesday, April 24, Ellison lectured on the topic, "The Pace of Information Technology Change in Health Care," in which he addressed ways to incorporate electronic data systems into all areas of clinical practice, education and research. Members of Mayo Clinic's physician and administrative staffs attended his lecture.
"We're honored that Larry Ellison agreed to join us to provide his keen insight into this important topic," said Hugh Smith, M.D., chair of the Mayo Clinic Board of Governors in Rochester. "Health care is an information intensive industry. We have much to learn from people like Larry as we work to identify the best ways to get the right information in the right place at the right time to make the best decisions for our patients."
On Thursday, April 25, Ellison was honored by the Executives' Club of Chicago as its 2002 International Executive of the Year. Since 1995 the Board of Directors of this organization, on behalf of members and Chicago's business community, has presented this honor to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the global business community. The award was presented by the Club's Chairman, Jim Goodwin, retired Chairman and CEO of United Airlines, at a luncheon attended by 1,300 senior executives, leaders of the Chicagoland business and civic communities.
"Larry Ellison was the clear choice to receive this award this year, " said Rich Niemiec, CEO of TUSC and prominent member of the Executives' Club of Chicago. "He is legendary in American business for navigating Oracle from an idea to a multi-billion dollar innovative force. But his real impact is his dedication to increasing productivity worldwide through open, innovative solutions. The Oracle database continues to be the cornerstone of every successful business and Oracle's cutting edge tools provide the competitive advantage that make industry leaders. One of Chicago's very own, Larry is one of Chicago's greatest success stories."
