GOLDEN GATE UNIVERSITY SELECTS ORACLE(r) ON LINUX; CONSOLIDATES DISPARATE SYSTEMS ONTO A SINGLE SOFTWARE PLATFORM
102 Year-Old Higher Education Institution To Develop Real-Time Information Portal for Its User Base with Oracle9i Application Server and Oracle9i Database
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.   18-FEB-2003 12:00 AM    Oracle Corp. (NASDAQ: ORCL), the world's largest enterprise software company, today announced that Golden Gate University, provider of undergraduate and graduate degrees for adult professionals, has standardized on Oracle9i Application Server and Oracle9i Database to consolidate the university's 12 disparate systems into a single software infrastructure on Linux. As a result, students, faculty and staff, as well as 57,000 alumni, are expected to have access to relevant university information through highly personalized, user-friendly interfaces built on infrastructure software from Oracle.

The built-in portal software included in Oracle9i Application Server enables Golden Gate University to provide a portal that will serve as an online resource for users to obtain current and valuable content including course descriptions, class schedules and registration. Through the university portal, users can efficiently retrieve and display data from information that is stored and maintained in Oracle9i Database, which has built-in business intelligence capabilities. Non-technical users including administrators and faculty will be able to manage content, create new online pages and share ideas to maximize communication and the availability of information.

"Golden Gate University's strategic objective is to provide access to information, transactions, curricula and learning resources via a web browser to our students, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, and friends," said Jeff Bialik, vice president of operations and CFO. "We selected Oracle for its leading edge, single database platform and its commitment to the education sector. Oracle's dynamic portal functionality will support self-service features that empower our users to be self reliant and more in control of their information and processing needs."

In addition to Oracle9i Application Server Portal, Golden Gate University is using two additional Oracle9i Application Server features, Oracle(r) Internet File System and Oracle Internet Directory. Developers used Oracle9i JDeveloper and Oracle's Internet file management capabilities to create an application that enables users from seven learning sites between Los Angeles and Seattle to quickly and easily view, upload and store documents and files within the portal. Oracle Internet Directory is the LDAP v3 compliant directory included as part of Oracle9i Application Server that will help enable the university to cost-effectively and securely manage access rights for 50,000 students, faculty and alumni.

Golden Gate University will also utilize Oracle9i Application Server Web Cache to accelerate the performance of their Web sites and portal pages and thus help maximize user productivity. For powerful text search and intelligent document management capabilities, Golden Gate University decided to implement Oracle Text and Oracle InterMedia. Golden Gate University plans to make the portal publicly available in Spring 2003.
