Oracle Corp. (NASDAQ: ORCL), the world's largest enterprise software company, today announced its intention to submit Oracle9i Database Release 2 on the Linux operating system for a Common Criteria (ISO 15408) evaluation at Evaluation Assurance Level (EAL) 4, the highest level generally achieved by commercial software vendors. This complements a related announcement issued today by Oracle and Red Hat outlining the companies' joint submission of the Linux operating system for a formal security evaluation (see related release: /corporate/press/1623351.html). By submitting Oracle9i Database Release 2 on Linux for EAL4, Oracle is meeting industry demand for a security evaluation of the database on the Linux operating system.
Making Linux Unbreakable
The Oracle(R) Database has completed 15 independent security evaluations, with 3 in progress that validate the company's secure development processes and the product's extensive security features. By submitting Oracle9i Database Release 2 on Red Hat Linux Advanced Server for EAL 4, Oracle helps enable Linux for the enterprise and helps build security into the platform's development process. The evaluation will also serve as another milestone in Oracle's commitment to provide secure and reliable support for mission-critical enterprise applications.
"Oracle's enterprise and government customers who make security a purchasing criteria have expressed great interest in deploying Oracle on Linux," said Mary Ann Davidson, chief security officer at Oracle Corporation. "The submission of Oracle9i Database Release 2 on Linux for a formal security evaluation signifies two important things: first that there is strong customer demand for products evaluated on Linux and second, that we intend to use Linux as an evaluation platform for our entire product stack."
This is the second evaluation of Oracle9i Database Release 2, the first of which is on both the Windows and Solaris operating systems, (see related release at: /corporate/press/1385425.html).
These evaluations will comply with the U.S. government's security policy directive, NSTISSP (National Security Telecommunications and Information Systems Security Policy) number 11, which requires independent security evaluations for products used in national security systems.
