Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ: ORCL), the world's largest enterprise software company, today announced that Henkel Consumer Adhesives, a manufacturer of innovative home, school, office and do-it-yourself products, has achieved a full return on its Oracle(r) technology infrastructure investment, saving more than $1 million in one year. Using Oracle products, Henkel consolidated 12 disparate data sources into a central 1.7 terabyte data warehouse powered by an Oracle9i Database. The business intelligence capabilities in Oracle9i Application Server allow Henkel managers to access this data, providing an instant 360-degree view of all sales and product information that can be analyzed daily for immediate action. The real-time access to data delivered by Oracle improves Henkel's overall efficiency and helps managers make accurate and strategic business decisions.
After being acquired by German-based Henkel Group, Henkel Consumer Adhesives needed to streamline and upgrade its information technology infrastructure quickly to be in sync with its global parent organization. With business data growing from 100 gigabytes to 1.7 terabytes in just a few years, Henkel sought a technology solution that would support the company's anticipated database needs down the road without adding new hardware or technical staff. To meet these needs, Henkel chose Oracle9i Database over Microsoft SQL Server because Oracle offered superior scalability, security and business intelligence functionality.
Henkel business managers use Oracle9i Application Server to perform sophisticated data mining analysis daily, instantly sharing valuable information with the company's sales force via the Web using an enterprise portal built with Oracle9i Application Server. After conducting a two-week analysis of its network of product-distribution warehouses, Henkel found it was more economical to close one product-distribution warehouse and reroute its truck traffic, saving the company $1 million. The company also saved $150,000 on consulting fees by using its Oracle technology to do the analysis in-house. Henkel had spent three months attempting to conduct the same assessment a year earlier, but was unable to complete the project without the Oracle infrastructure and business intelligence tools.
Now, sales information is analyzed every morning against forecasts, enabling sales people to make informed decisions based on real time information. For example, Henkel is using Oracle9i Application Server to allow the company to factor in geographic information to anticipate spikes in demand for items such as insulation in colder climates, and boost shipments at different times of the year.
"The Oracle9i technology infrastructure with built-in business intelligence functionality helps us manage information about our product line so well that now we can alert our clients - stores carrying our products - to customer buying trends as they are happening," said Matt Rhoades, manager for shared data warehouse services at Henkel. "Because of deep performance management capabilities like these, we credit Oracle with helping Henkel Consumer Adhesives be named Wal-Mart 'Vendor of the Year' in three different categories."
As a result of the ROI and scalability demonstrated by the Oracle business intelligence solution, Henkel Consumer Adhesives' parent company requested that the 26 data marts of Henkel Group's 13 North American subsidiaries be consolidated into a single platform operating within Henkel Consumer Adhesives' data warehouse.
