Oracle(r) Enterprise Manager Extends Systems Management Support to EMC(r) Symmetrix(r) DMX Systems
New Plug-in Helps Joint Customers to Achieve Higher Service Levels and Reduce Cost of Managing EMC and Oracle Environments
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.   16-MAY-2007 05:05 AM    Oracle today announced new systems management support for EMC Symmetrix DMX storage systems, to enable customers to maximize the value of their investment in EMC and Oracle infrastructure. Generally available today is a new Management Plug-in for Oracle(r) Enterprise Manager 10g that delivers comprehensive monitoring and diagnostic capabilities as well as configuration and service level management for EMC Symmetrix DMX systems.

Customers using the new Plug-in for EMC Symmetrix DMX benefit by enabling their storage and database administrators (DBAs) to collaborate and perform functions that cross administrative domains such as storage capacity planning, database storage layout best practices, and root cause analysis of performance problems. With this centralized management solution, administrators can:

* Increase quality of service through common storage view of databases shared by DBAs and storage administrators;

* Enhance database performance by identifying storage I/O related bottlenecks; and,

* Optimize storage-related capital expenditure through accurate enterprise-wide reporting of storage usage by databases.

"Customers are seeking a comprehensive management solution to enhance the administration of key IT systems that surround Oracle in their application environment," said Richard Sarwal, senior vice president of Applications and Systems Management, Oracle. "Our work with EMC enables us to deliver a solution to the tens of thousands of joint customers that rely on EMC and Oracle to help them administer their database applications and underlying infrastructure more effectively and efficiently."

"For more than a decade, our joint customers have reaped tremendous benefits from the long-standing relationship between EMC and Oracle," said Barbara Robidoux, vice president of Product Marketing, EMC. "The work between EMC and Oracle on this Plug-in enables our customers to easily manage and monitor critical systems and services, decrease related costs, and provide a higher quality of service with this single, integrated solution."

"One of the challenges of managing large database environments is the coordination of storage management," said Wijbrand Pauw, IT Manager, Rabobank. "Historically, DBAs and storage administrators use different tools -- a leading cause of productivity loss and reduced service levels. We expect the Plug-in to ease the administration and monitoring of our Oracle Databases running on EMC Symmetrix DMX storage resulting in increased quality of service and higher productivity."

System Management Plug-ins and Connectors play an integral role in Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g's "top-down" approach to application and systems management by broadening support for managing heterogeneous environments. This heterogeneous support, combined with Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g's capabilities in service level management, application performance management, configuration management, and lifecycle management capabilities enable administrators to streamline processes, automate manual tasks and better align IT resources with business objectives. Additionally, Plug-ins and Connectors automatically benefit from Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g's broad set of monitoring, configuration and service level management features including alerts, lights-out monitoring, automatic performance and configuration data collection and trending, end-to-end transaction monitoring, system topology views, blackout windows, and templates. Collectively these rich features provide comprehensive system-service monitoring and help significantly improve service delivery.

EMC and Oracle - Longstanding Partnership and Technical Collaboration
Working collaboratively since 1995, Oracle and EMC have more than 40,000 joint customers, providing solutions to 90 of the Fortune 100 businesses. Oracle is a charter member of the EMC Developers Program (EDP) and EMC is an Oracle Certified Advantage Partner. The companies work together to bring tightly integrated offerings to market for their joint customers. EMC and Oracle maintain a Joint Service Center (JSC) staffed by service engineers from both companies to facilitate faster problem resolution for their shared customers and serve as a dedicated lab to duplicate customer environments for solution development, testing and benchmarks. Both companies utilize each other's technologies in their own businesses.
