Oracle today
announced Enterprise Linux training and certification from Oracle University. Oracle now
provides course offerings on the Linux operating system, as well as courses for database and
system administrators who run Oracle Database on Linux. These courses lead to new Oracle
Certification Program credentials that recognize Linux skills and expertise with Oracle Database.
"With Oracle's long-standing commitment to Linux, it's a natural evolution for Oracle University
to extend its world-class training curriculum to specifically address the Linux community," said
John L. Hall, senior vice president of Oracle University. "With our proven track record of training
customers on subjects spanning the entire Oracle software stack, we now embark on a strategy of
providing Linux training to anyone who wants to learn and master Linux."
Enterprise Linux courses include:
- Enterprise Linux: Fundamentals (4 days)
- Enterprise Linux: System Administration (4 days)
Oracle Database on Linux courses include:
- Oracle Database: Managing Oracle on Linux for DBAs (2 days)
- Oracle Database: Managing Oracle on Linux for System Administrators (3 days)
Enterprise Linux: Fundamentals provides the essential skills needed to be proficient at the Unix
or Linux command line. This hands-on course covers the Linux file system and how to
manipulate it; the basic Linux notions of pipes, redirection, regular expressions, and other tools
for performing complex tasks; the management of processes and jobs; vi, the standard Unix
editor; and the ability to construct shell scripts to automate routine or difficult operations.
Enterprise Linux: System Administration is for students already comfortable with working in the
Linux environment. This in-depth course provides the skills needed to set up and maintain Linux
computers. The class covers subjects ranging from initial installation of Enterprise Linux to day-
to-day administrative tasks such as management of user accounts and disk space. Also included
are troubleshooting skills that system administrators need to cope with unexpected behavior.
Oracle Database: Managing Oracle on Linux for DBAs is designed to give database
administrators a firm understanding of the components required to successfully deploy Oracle
Database on Enterprise Linux. Students learn how to configure the Linux operating system for
optimal performance with an Oracle database. Also covered are such administrative tasks as file
system choices, kernel and memory model selection, automated startup and shutdown scripts, and
customizing the database for Linux. Hands-on practices take the student through the entire
installation, tuning, configuration, and debugging process.
Oracle Database: Managing Oracle on Linux for System Administrators prepares Linux system
administrators to manage a system on which Oracle Database is installed. Topics covered include
preparing Linux for a database installation, how Oracle works on Enterprise Linux, the database
architecture, and the effects that the database has on the process list, disk space, memory use, and
CPU utilization. Hands-on practices reinforce the concepts presented, including the installation
and use of several tools that help to gather diagnostic information.
