Oracle Corp. (NASDAQ: ORCL), the world's largest enterprise software company, today reaffirmed its strong commitment to Rdb customers, who praise the company for its nine years of post-acquisition support, innovation and stewardship. Since its acquisition of Rdb from Digital Equipment Corporation in 1994, Oracle has continued to maintain a focus on quality and stability while enhancing the Rdb features customers have deployed in production environments worldwide. Oracle also adds value to its Rdb customers through support of other Oracle technologies, including Oracle(r) Database and Oracle Application Server.
"Without exception, Oracle's Rdb customers continue to receive a high level of support and commitment from Oracle," said Chuck Rozwat, executive vice president, Database Server, Server Technologies Administration for Oracle. "The key to our successful Rdb acquisition was simple - keep the customers happy by treating them fairly, providing solid support and maintenance while listening to and responding to their needs. One of the ways we listen is through annual Rdb Technical Forums. These forums are offered at no charge and present a series of sessions conducted by Oracle Rdb engineers and experts."
Rdb customers who report a high level of satisfaction with their service from Oracle include: Cinergy Corp., Delight Information Systems, the Department of Social and Family Affairs (Ireland), Digi-Key Corporation, Dollar Rent A Car, Flinders Medical Centre, Intracorp, JCC Consulting, KAD Denmark, Kittle's Furniture, Madrid Stock Exchange, the New York Mercantile Exchange, ProRail, SEB, Software Concepts International, SONY Deutschland, SWX Swiss Exchange, TAFE NSW, TELINTRANS, Thrifty Car Rental, and VX Company.
Flinders Medical Centre
"When Oracle acquired the product in 1994 we were very worried about Rdb's future," said Chris Barratt, information systems development manager for Flinders Medical Centre. "Our worry was misplaced. Oracle instituted processes to help ensure customers were well informed about the future of Rdb. At the same time, Oracle gave Rdb a new lease on life by significantly increasing the resources devoted to enhancing the database. At no point have we felt pressured to move to Oracle's main database product."
Flinders Medical Centre, a public teaching hospital and medical center located in Australia, became an Rdb customer in 1985 when Rdb was a Digital Equipment Corporation product. Since that time the company has used Rdb as the preferred database for its entire mission critical software needs.
Madrid Stock Exchange
"We began to use Rdb in 1991 and were concerned about continued support when Oracle acquired Rdb," said Agustin Ramos, systems technology manager for Bolsa de Madrid. "We need not have worried. The support has been very good and very professional and we have always received an immediate response to our inquiries. At no time did Oracle raise the question of migration to their database. The service provided has always been of the highest professional standard."
SONY Deutschland
"For more than 11 years we have been using Oracle Rdb in a mission-critical application environment, managing Sony Germany's warehouse in Cologne, Germany," said Peter Moser-Glasder, logistics process group systems for SONY Deutschland. "In my experience, Oracle has continuously improved their level of support for Rdb. We always receive a quick response from Oracle's technical team after logging a ticket through Oracle Metalink or by calling Oracle directly."
New York Mercantile Exchange
"The New York Mercantile Exchange has used Oracle Rdb in systems critical to the operation of its business for many years and continues to do so today," said Samuel H. Gaer, Chief Information Officer for New York Mercantile Exchange. "Since Oracle has owned Rdb, it has provided excellent service. We have been so satisfied, we are moving to another Oracle platform to meet the business' growing needs and to hopefully achieve even greater cost savings."
Intracorp
"I have worked with Rdb for more than 16 years," said Ken McGinnis, database administrator III for Intracorp. "Oracle Corporation has maintained the outstanding level of customer support for Rdb that existed before its acquisition, and has continued to develop new features and performance enhancements."
Delight Information Systems
"Over all these years our core business, running four online reservations systems, with about 1,300 to 1,500 online users today, was very successful and we did not encounter major problems," said Luc Allemeersch, database administrator for Delight Information Systems. "The switch from Digital Equipment Corp. to Oracle in December 1994 did in no way harm our operations. The evolution of the product and its support within Oracle Corp. were and continue to be very satisfactory."
Delight Information Systems, a service company for the travel and leisure industry, has been using Oracle Rdb since 1992.
Rdb is nearly 20 years old, yet in just nine years Oracle has developed more than 50 percent of the code base. Oracle's significant enhancements, dedication, support and resources continue to make Rdb one of the best choices for high-throughput database applications on OpenVMS systems. Today, Oracle still supports 2,000 Rdb customers around the world.
