Oracle Relational Database #1 with 48.6% Share Based on Total Software Revenue for 2005—Gartner

In its recent report "Market Share: Relational Database Management Systems by Operating System, Worldwide, 2005 (23 May 2006)," analysts at Gartner, Inc., found that Oracle's market share1 grew to 48.6% based on total revenue for 2005 in a surging worldwide market. Other report findings:

A Wide Range of Businesses Choose Oracle
"IDC's findings show that Oracle remains the most financially successful RDBMS by more than two to one margin over its nearest competitor," said Willie Hardie, Vice President of Database product marketing, Oracle. "Oracle Database 10g, with its unique clustering capabilities, has been widely adopted by our customers and partners in the enterprise as well as in the small and midsize business market. The ease of use and self-managing features of Oracle Database 10g make it easy for businesses of all sizes to meet their users service level objectives, and turn data into a business advantage."

(1) In prior years, Gartner Dataquest Software measured market share in terms of new license revenue. However, to more accurately represent the market and account for the emergence and increasing popularity of open-source software and buyer consumption models such as hosted and subscription offerings, Gartner has moved to measure market share in terms of Total Software Revenue which includes revenue generated from new license, updates, subscriptions and hosting, technical support and maintenance. Professional Services and Hardware revenue are not included in Total Software Revenue.
