IDC: Oracle Relational Database #1 in Revenue with 44.6% Market Share (1)

IDC's vendor market share information for the worldwide relational and object-relational database management systems (RDBMS) software market in 2005 reports that:

  • Oracle is #1 overall with 44.6% market share
  • Oracle leads the worldwide RDBMS software market with revenue of $6.5 billion—over 21 share points higher than that of the nearest vendor
"Oracle was once again atop the RDBMS software market in 2005," said Carl Olofson, Research Vice President, Application Development and Deployment, IDC. "This is partly because we are seeing an increase in database deployments in the Americas, possibly driven by a greater need for data availability as well as by falling unit prices for storage."

A Wide Range of Businesses Choose Oracle
"IDC's findings show that Oracle remains the most financially successful RDBMS by more than two to one margin over its nearest competitor," said Willie Hardie, Vice President of Database product marketing, Oracle. "Oracle Database 10g, with its unique clustering capabilities, has been widely adopted by our customers and partners in the enterprise as well as in the small and midsize business market. The ease of use and self-managing features of Oracle Database 10g make it easy for businesses of all sizes to meet their users service level objectives, and turn data into a business advantage."
