Richard Foote
Richard Foote has been working in the IT Industry for over 22 years. He got his first IT position as a humble Cobol Programmer, and over the next 10 years he worked in various IT roles. In 1997, he joined Oracle Corporation as a DBA specialist and technical trainer. During his time at Oracle, Richard became regarded as one of the leading DBA specialists and instructors in Australasia, winning many internal awards. In 1999 he won (along with Marcel Kratochvil) the second best paper award at Australia's OpenWorld for their ground breaking "Good DBA Bad DBA" presentation. In 2002 Richard left Oracle to become an independent consultant and in 2006 his career went full circle when he joined the Australian Public Service as a DBA specialist and is responsible for many large scale, mission critical database systems. He's been a member of the Oracle OakTable Network since 2002 and currently maintains a very popular Blog focusing on Oracle Indexes (http://richardfoote.wordpress.com). In 2008, Oracle named Richard an Oracle ACE Director.

Indexes are a crucial component in any Oracle database. This two-day seminar is a detailed study of how various index structures are implemented by Oracle, including B-Tree, Reverse Key, Function-Based, Bitmap, Bitmap Join, Partitioned, Linguistic and Index Organized Tables. It discusses index internals, how indexes should be maintained and importantly examines how the Cost Based Optimizer determines their use or otherwise.
