Oracle shares healthcare best practice at EU congress

Oracle deepened its dialogue with EU officials at the World Healthcare Congress, the only major international forum for healthcare leaders to share their experiences. Over 500 professionals came to Barcelona, Spain, for the event, which took place between 26-28 March 2007 and of which Oracle was the silver sponsor.

The congress attracted national health ministers, leading government officials, hospital directors, IT innovators, decision makers from public and private insurance funds, pharmaceutical and medical device companies, and healthcare industry suppliers.

Oracle hosted a private breakfast for officials in government and public administrations. The discussion there centred on today’s healthcare challenges and how industry and the market can cooperate to improve the quality of care and access to it. Among the guests were representatives from the European Commission, France, the UK, Poland, Canada, Russia and Slovenia. At the meeting, delegates reiterated their commitment to driving transformation in healthcare through better use of ICT. Oracle will continue to hold regular EU round table discussions throughout the year, driven by Karl Cox, Oracle's EMEA vice president for Public Policy and Corporate Affairs.

At the congress, Oracle customers discussed how the mapping of the human genome has opened up new possibilities for personalised medicine. UK BioBank, University Medical Centre of Groningen, and Dr Thick from NHS Connecting for Health, reported on various projects for collecting genetic and lifestyle data to aid research into personalised medicine. Applications can include care coordination, education, empowerment for self-management, and shared decision-making based on the patient’s circumstances. One of the key messages from customers was the need to store and analyse large amounts of secure, reliable and uniquely identified data, which is why they are using Oracle as the infrastructure for their projects.

Oracle also hosted a press briefing with six journalists, in which Charles Scatchard, Oracle's vice president of Healthcare and Life Sciences for EMEA, and Jean-Francois Penciolelli, Oracle's business development director, Global Health Sciences, explained how an Electronic Health Records infrastructure can help achieve patient-centred care.
