Hutchison-Priceline Implements Oracle9i Real Application Clusters
For Higher Data Scalability and Availability

Asia’s “Name Your Own Price” Internet Travel Service
Takes Off With Oracle

Hong Kong, June 27, 2002 - Oracle Systems Hong Kong Limited (“Oracle Hong Kong”), a wholly owned subsidiary of Oracle Corp. (NASDAQ: ORCL), the world’s largest enterprise software company, today announced that Hutchison-Priceline, Asia’s “Name Your Own Price” Internet Travel Service for airline tickets and hotel rooms, is using Oracle9i Real Application Clusters as the foundation for all of its Asia travel service transactions.

Hutchison-Priceline is working with one of the travel industry’s largest collections of travel operators, including 25 Asian and international airlines and 8,000 hotel properties around the world. The proven performance of Oracle9i Real Application Clusters? unsurpassed scalability and availability ? helps the service to achieve substantial cost-savings and supports the company’s need to handle high volumes of transactions on a 24/7 basis.

“Hutchison-Priceline chose Oracle9i Real Application Clusters because it allows us to run real-world applications unchanged as we add additional computing power on demand,” said Parakh Davé, Chief Technology Officer for Hutchison-Priceline.com. “Oracle’s unique clustering technology addresses the core economics of computing – doing more, but at a lower cost - and fits very well with our ambitious expansion plan to deliver affordable air tickets and hotel rooms to every traveler from the Asia-Pacific region.”

Hutchison-Priceline (Travel) Ltd. launched a bilingual Cantonese-English transactional travel site in Hong Kong (priceline.com.hk) on April 16, followed by an English site in Singapore on May 29 (priceline.com.sg). A bilingual site for Taiwan is scheduled to follow later this year.

An Asian-headquartered company, Hutchison-Priceline was formed by Hong Kong-based multinational conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Ltd., part of the Li Ka-shing group of companies, and priceline.com Inc. in the United States. Priceline.com began its Name Your Own Price services in the United States in 1998. The company has sold more than 21 million travel products to more than 13 million travelers.

Oracle’s clustering technology is compelling for transaction-intensive applications, particularly those used by companies like Hutchison-Priceline. Oracle9i Real Applications Clusters solved Hutchinson-Priceline’s scalability issues with high availability, all in a single product. With Oracle9i Real Application Clusters, Hutchison-Priceline can start with a single low-cost computer and add computers – online, and without any application changes -- as user demand grows for their applications. Prior to this, IT departments using older database cluster architectures had to compromise between scalability and reliability and spend days reconfiguring data for the applications to even run.

“Hutchison-Priceline customers use the Internet to make offers that are guaranteed by a credit card. This requires a high level of security. Oracle takes security seriously as evidenced by the 15 independent security evaluations for its products, and this better enables us to concentrate on our core business,” said Davé.

Hutchison-Priceline also uses Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) to provide pro-active database monitoring via a PDA. This gives Database Administrators (DBAs) the ability to comprehensively manage the Oracle database systems anytime, anywhere.

“Priceline in Asia empowers leisure travelers to name their own price and capture great travel bargains across Asia. Oracle is excited to be its technology partner and to help provide the most cost effective, scalable and reliable online platform with Oracle9i Real Application Clusters,“ said Arics Poon, managing director for Oracle Hong Kong. “We are keen to work with Hutchison-Priceline to provide the best travel experience to all travelers across Asia.”
