Oracle Gives Students The Key To An
IT Future
24 Hong Kong secondary schools
join the Oracle Internet Academy
Hong Kong, August 21, 2002 - Oracle
Systems Hong Kong Limited (“Oracle Hong Kong”), a wholly-owned subsidiary
of Oracle Corporation, the world's largest enterprise software company,
today announced a milestone education initiative – Oracle Internet Academy
– in its long-term commitment to supporting Hong Kong SAR Government’s
goals to promote IT Education. As part of a global program, local secondary
schools will gain access to Oracle’s latest technology, curriculum,
and support, providing students with the necessary skills to pursue academic
and professional opportunities.
Oracle is teaming with the Hong Kong Association for
Computer Education (HKACE) and the Education Department to introduce the
Internet Academy to secondary schools in 2002-03. In this first year,
Oracle’s investment in the program is valued at US$3.5 million. Participating
schools will receive benefits from Oracle including teacher professional
development, curriculum materials, access to a hosted online learning
and practice environment, on-going teacher support, and the opportunity
for students and teachers to receive Oracle certification – a globally
recognized credential.
“We believe that strong IT skills are vital to Hong
Kong’s future,“ said NG Hok-Ling, Chairman of HKACE. “I welcome
the Academy program – with its focus on developing database and Java
programming skills – as a major contribution to broaden and supplement
the school curriculum.”
While the Internet Academy was developed with a traditional
classroom in mind, it exposes students to the latest in e-learning technology.
“To enable our youngsters to keep pace with the changing
needs of the information age, we are committed to promoting IT education
as well as IT in Education in Hong Kong. The Education Department welcomes
Oracle’s commitment and support in training the next generation, in
particular in providing an avenue for students to learn both generic and
job specific skills so as to prepare them for further studies, for work,
or both,” said SOU Hon-Poo, Chief Curriculum Development Officer, Technology
Education, Education Department of HKSAR Government. “This initiative
sets a good example of community involvement in education.”
Two years ago, Oracle brought the Oracle Academic Initiative
to local universities, providing tertiary faculty and students with world-class
IT tools and education. The Oracle Internet Academy now makes IT education
available to secondary schools too.
“We want to ensure that every student – throughout
their time in education - has access to the technologies that the information
society demands,” said Arics Poon, Managing Director of Oracle Hong
Kong. “Working with the Education Department and HKACE, we are able
to extend the reach of IT into secondary education and show our support
for the HKSAR Government’s technology goals.”
