Get Assurance of
Unbreakable Linux Support
Hong Kong, May 31, 2004 - Oracle announced
it has appointed Mr. Leigh Warren, vice president, to lead its Linux Business
Unit in Asia Pacific. The Linux Business Unit will work to develop and
support customer implementations on the Linux open source platform, a
market that IDC estimates will grow in Asia Pacific from 1 percent in
2003 to 9.1 percent by 2008, totalling US$67.1 million1 .
"Leigh's appointment at the helm of our
Linux Business Unit is a signal to the market that Oracle is fully committed
to continue development and support of Linux as a highly reliable choice
for customers here in Asia Pacific," said Derek Williams, executive
vice president for Oracle Asia Pacific.
While interest in Linux is growing rapidly, industry
analysts indicate that enterprise-level service and support for Linux
remains the primary concern for further Linux adoption. Forrester Research,
in a March 2003 report, found that 72 percent of executives polled said
they plan to increase their investments in Linux2. In the same report,
46 percent of executives polled cited ‘lack of support' as
the biggest concern hindering Linux adoption.
"Linux has triggered a movement across Asia Pacific
that has converged from a steady progression of organizations shifting
to a low-cost computing model," said Leigh Warren, vice president
for Linux Business Unit, Oracle Asia Pacific. "Oracle's overarching
goal is to help build Linux standards in the Asian markets so that customers
can benefit from greater choice of software and hardware products using
Linux."
Unbreakable Support for Linux Customers in Asia
Pacific
Oracle's Unbreakable Linux initiative extends technology support
beyond its own software stack to provide code-level support for Oracle
certified Linux partners. This support ensures that customers can receive
full technical support for any Oracle certified Linux partner anywhere
in the world.
"Commitment to provide enterprise-class support
from vendors like Oracle is exactly what's required for organizations
to easily take advantage of all the performance and security benefits
inherent in Linux technology," said Vivian Tero, senior analyst,
Infrastructure Software Research for IDC Asia/Pacific.
Oracle's Unbreakable Linux partners include Red
Hat and Novell. Oracle also supports Japan's Miracle Linux Corporation
and China's Red Flag Software Co., Ltd.. In another significant
move last month, Oracle extended its global partnership with Dell into
China, certifying Dell PowerEdge servers with Red Flag DC 4.0 and Oracle
Database 10g at its China Development Center in Beijing.
Oracle has also begun certification of Asianux, Asia's
first standardized Linux operating environment developed through a joint
partnership between Red Flag and Miracle Linux at Oracle's China
Development Center in Beijing. Once Oracle certification is complete,
businesses will be able to deploy and receive full joint technical support
for all of Oracle's latest offerings on Asianux, including Oracle
