The Hong Kong Jockey Club Sets a Real-Time Model for Time-Critical Industries with Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database

First deployment in Greater China of ultra fast memory optimized database technology

Hong Kong, March 30, 2006 - The successful adoption of Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database technology at the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) sets a real-life example for the time-critical industries in the region. As the first enterprise customer in Greater China to deploy Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database, the HKJC is enabled to aggregate, correlate and process massive data volumes for real time business intelligence during football match activities. The memory optimized relational database technology offers an excellent model of how enterprises in time-critical industries can successfully make themselves into real-time enterprises.

Horse racing is the most popular spectator sport in Hong Kong and the HKJC is the city's only authorized operator. It also operates the Hong Kong Government's Mark Six Lottery and under government authority offers fixed odds betting on football matches held outside Hong Kong. With all its businesses relying on interfacing with its huge customer base and online applications, much of HKJC's IT system focuses on its ability to process information in real-time.

"Facing a massive customer base and a tremendous volume of transactions, we need systems to deliver and process data instantly, while at the same time maintaining stable and secure availability. The challenge is to find systems that can respond in real-time, that are highly scalable for future growth, and that provide us competitive advantages with increased return on investment," said Dr. K.S. Sin, Manager, IT Architecture, the HKJC. "The use of Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database provides us with a perfect solution."

Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database is a memory-optimized relational database that empowers applications with instant responsiveness and the very high throughput required by today's time-critical industries like telecommunications, capital markets, defense and gaming. Deployed in the application tier as a cache or embedded database, applications are able to access, capture or update information many times faster. This allows the company to attract and retain more customers and sense and respond to business-critical events that are the most valuable.

The performance of data processing has been greatly enhanced with the use of Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database in reducing the processing time and fulfilling extremely fast response-time requirements and in particular, by empowering key real-time business-intelligence processes. "With Oracle TimesTen technology, we are able to analyze the football pool continually and deliver key performance data within sub-second. The quick response time has given us a great advantage in managing and mitigating risk exposure from our fixed odds betting operations," said Dr. Sin.

"To meet its huge demand and provide customers with the most convenient and efficient services, the HKJC has always been at the forefront of developing and implementing new technologies. Oracle is proud to provide technology and services to the HKJC in matching these real-time process requirements and the high customer service levels," said Chris O'Connor, TimesTen Business Unit, Oracle Corporation, Asia Pacific Division.

In addition to Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database, the HKJC has also been using Oracle Financials and Oracle Database products.

"Along with 1,500 companies around the globe who use Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database, the successful HKJC adoption provides another client endorsement of our proven technology. The business value delivered by Oracle TimesTen is a good indicator for time-critical industries to assess and leverage," O'Connor concluded.

About Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database
Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database is a memory-optimized relational database that empowers applications with the instant responsiveness and very high throughput required by today's real-time enterprises and industries such as telecom, financial services and defense. Deployed in the application tier as a cache or embedded database, Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database operates on data stores that fit entirely in physical memory using standard SQL interfaces. The base product, Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database, is also available with the following two options:

  • Replication – TimesTen to TimesTen: Enables real-time data replication between servers for high availability and load sharing. Data replication configurations can be active-standby or active-active, using asynchronous or synchronous transmission, with conflict detection and resolution and automatic resynchronization after a failed server is restored.
  • Cache Connect to Oracle: Creates a real-time, updatable cache for Oracle data residing in the application tier. It offloads computing cycles from backend systems and enables remarkably responsive and scalable real-time applications. Cache Connect to Oracle loads a subset of Oracle data into TimesTen, propagates updates in both directions, automates pass through of SQL requests for non-cached data and automatically resynchronizes data after failures.
