MTR Corporation Strengthens Operational Foundation with
Oracle's PeopleSoft
Enterprise Human Capital Management
Next-generation system streamlines processes and
delivers self-service functionality
Hong Kong, July 10, 2007 - MTR Corporation has successfully migrated to a new-generation human resource management system based on Oracle's PeopleSoft Enterprise Human Capital Management (HCM) application software. The new application software system, implemented by Oracle Consulting Services, provides MTR Corporation with a more standardized and maintainable platform.
MTR Corporation had been using an earlier version of the software, with significant in-house modifications since 1999. With Oracle's acquisition of PeopleSoft in 2005, there was an opportunity for better integration of its HCM system with its Oracle Financial Management system. By sourcing all core business systems from Oracle, MTR Corporation has gained a single point of accountability for application support and can leverage the resources of Oracle Consulting Services for future enhancements.

The MTR Corporation employs more than 6,000 employees who are based in Hong Kong as well as overseas on international assignments. The switch-over to the HCM system was conducted smoothly on Sunday, April 1, 2007. Staff have encountered no difficulties in transferring to using the new system.
Over the last 12 months, Oracle Consulting Services (OCS) together with Vanda Systems – an Oracle Certified Partner, and teams from MTR Corporation's IT Services, Human Resources, Finance and business groups had been working through a careful implementation plan. Based on OCS's deep understanding of human resource management processes, the plan was designed to minimize disruption to MTR Corporation's operations while putting in place the foundation for enhanced HR functions.
"The previous version of the PeopleSoft HCM system that MTR Corporation was using had a number of custom-developed extensions to accommodate local requirements, such as management of the Mandatory Provident Fund scheme. This made both system maintenance and upgrades difficult," said Kevin Khong, Director, Oracle Consulting Services, Hong Kong.
"PeopleSoft Enterprise HCM system version 8.9, which MTR Corporation is now running, incorporates the functionalities to address the Hong Kong-specific statutory requirements and is, of course, fully supported by Oracle,"said Khong.
While supporting all the functions of the previous version, PeopleSoft Enterprise HCM 8.9 has significantly-enhanced features. This includes a three-tier architecture that enables MTR Corporation to deliver self-service HR functionality to all employees and managers via a secure web interface. Together with a rule-driven payroll engine, this application architecture lets MTR Corporation address changing business needs more easily.
