ORACLE HELPS MANCHESTER AIRPORT BECOME AMONG UK’s FIRST TO LIFT ONE BAG RULE

07-JAN-2008 Manchester Airport has been granted permission by the Department for Transport (DFT) to lift the one item of hand baggage regulation from January 7th. The Airport will be one of the first in the UK to relax restrictions on the number of hand baggage items passengers are allowed to carry. Tightened security restrictions which had meant passengers were limited to one piece of hand baggage, have been in place since August 10th 2006. However, following a change in policy by the DFT, airports have been able to apply for permission to lift the one bag rule if able to demonstrate that passenger movements would not be affected by extra baggage and security checks.

Central to its successful application, was Oracle’s Business Intelligence (BI) solution, which provides Manchester Airport’s management team with interactive dashboards of flight, passenger and baggage movements. Essentially, data relating to baggage and passenger flows throughout the airport are analysed by Oracle BI to identify passenger and baggage movement trends. The forecasting capabilities provided by Oracle BI helps give Manchester Airport the ability to cope with the extra pressure of screening additional bags, by helping senior management identify future trends, and plan accordingly. With this information, management can plan ahead with additional X-Ray machines and extra staff weeks in advance.
