[ M ]

mapping
The process of matching data from source systems to the structures in a data warehouse.

mapping tools
  Tools used to perform mapping.

massively parallel processing (MPP)
The shared-nothing architecture of parallel computing that takes a number of nodes and enables them to communicate rapidly.

materialized view
A complete facility for creating, maintaining, and using summary tables.

MB - megabyte   One million bytes.

measure
Data within the core of a data warehouse on which all online analytical processing (OLAP) queries depend. See also fact data.

megabyte (MB)
  One million bytes.

Meta Object Facility (MOF)
The Object Management Group's (OMG's) adopted standard for modeling metadata and representing it as CORBA objects.

metadata
Data that contains information about data and structures.

metalayer
An architectural component of a data warehouse that resides between the warehouse data and the user and contains metadata.

middleware   Software that provides some functionality between the database and the end user.

MIPS
  Millions of instructions per second.

model   A type of database object that contains a set of interrelated equations that are used to calculate data and assign it to a variable or dimension value.

MOF—Meta Object Facility   The OMG’s adopted standard for modeling metadata and representing it as CORBA objects.

MOLAP—multidimensional online analytical processing   Data stored and presented to the user over three or more dimensions.

MPP—massively parallel processing   The shared-nothing architecture of parallel computing that takes a number of nodes and enables them to communicate rapidly.

MIDI—Musical Instrument Digital Interface   A high-quality audio file format.

MIME—Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension
A protocol for allowing e-mail messages to contain various types of media, such as text, audio, video, and images.

multidimensional analysis
Another term for online analytical processing.

multidimensional data
Data that is organized by two or more dimensions. Two-dimensional data is structured as an array with rows and columns. Three- or more-dimensional data is structured as a cube in which each dimension, or group of dimensions, forms an edge. See also cube, dimension, and edge.

multidimensional database
A database management system where data can be viewed and manipulated in multiple dimensions to support specialized query techniques, such as drill-down. See also cube.

multidimensional online analytical processing (MOLAP)

Data stored and presented to the user over three or more dimensions.

multimedia database
A database containing other than relational data, such as video or audio information.

Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME)   A protocol for allowing e-mail messages to contain various types of media, such as text, audio, video, and images.

multithreaded   A program designed to have parts of its code execute concurrently.

Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)   A high-quality audio file format.
