VAR—value-added reseller   An entity that purchases products from another entity, adds software, services, or special hardware components, and then sells the package.



variable   A type of database object that stores data and that can be either single-celled or dimensioned. (A dimensioned variable is an array whose cells are individual data values.) See also array, cell, dimension, dimension value, and object.



versioning   The ability of a single definition to maintain information about multiple physical instantiations.



very large database (VLDB)   A database measured in terabytes.



virtual machine   An abstract specification for a computing device that can be implemented in different ways, in software or hardware.



virtual private network (VPN)   A private network that uses the public telecommunication infrastructure, maintaining privacy through the use of a tunneling protocol and security procedures. Contrast with system of owned or leased lines that can be used by only one company.
