Oracle Event Sustainability

Did you know?

  • Recycling, composting, and donation programs during Oracle OpenWorld and JavaOne keep an estimated 140 tons of material from landfill. That's enough to fill about 10 garbage trucks.
  • 60 percent of the food you eat at Oracle OpenWorld and JavaOne comes from farms, bakeries, delis, and waters within 100 miles of San Francisco. We hope you enjoy the local fare along with a side of lower carbon footprint.
  • Steady reductions in paper use onsite since 2007 have saved an estimated 1,373 trees.
  • Decisions to use recycled content paper when printing and eliminate bottled water have helped to conserve more than 800,000 gallons of water since 2008—enough to overflow an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

We're doing all this while Oracle OpenWorld and JavaOne continue to grow to provide better content and value-added experiences, proving you can go green and not go without.

What Oracle Is Doing

Oracle is committed to developing practices and products that protect the environment. The sustainability vision for all our events is to support Oracle's environmental policies and build a position of leadership by improving the overall attendee experience through sustainable event ideas and practices.

We've come a long way and acknowledge that we have a lot of work to do to achieve our goals. We encourage you to learn about our steady progress and measurable milestones in our sustainable meetings report.

Listen and watch as we learn how to do what we do better.

Enjoy sustainability-related event experiences onsite.

  • Join Oracle for two days' worth of ocean-related volunteer activities with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. Watch for details coming soon.
  • Need to catch some green space in the city? Oracle is partnering with Friends of the Urban Forest to plant 30 trees in the neighborhoods around Moscone Center the weekend before Oracle OpenWorld and JavaOne. More trees to hug in one of the greenest cities in the world!

JavaOne 2011 Carbon Offset Program

JavaOne attendees can help Oracle help the planet this year by purchasing a $10 Carbon Offset Add-On with any registration package. Each Carbon Offset Add-On represents the reduction of 2,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, enough to balance one long-haul airline flight and three hotel nights. Funds collected from this add-on purchase will go toward TerraPass carbon-offset programs. For more information about TerraPass programs, visit terrapass.com.

What You Can Do

Making a difference by reducing your event impact is very simple. One might say it's as easy as turning off the lights when you leave your hotel room.

  • Reduce: By foregoing daily laundry service while at hotels during Oracle OpenWorld and JavaOne attendees could save more than 1.6 million gallons of water. That's enough water to fill an Olympic-size swimming pool twice, and then some.
  • Reuse: Providing water coolers at Oracle OpenWorld and JavaOne eliminates 7.5 tons of plastic bottles—roughly the weight of four cars. The cups used at the water stations are made of renewable resources and composted. If you want to have a greater positive impact, bring your own reusable bottle.
  • Recycle: If we recycled all the newspapers printed in the U.S. on a typical Sunday, we would save 550,000 trees—about 26 million trees per year. Our venues and hotels provide some of the best recycling programs in the country, aiming to achieve 75 percent diversion of materials from landfill. Please support them by recycling what you don't need.

What Our Customers Are Doing

Oracle is proud to recognize our customers for their commitment to protecting the environment. Every year at Oracle OpenWorld we honor 15 customers and/or partners for their achievements in using Oracle products to create sustainability solutions for their business.
