Q&A: Glenn Hoormann Discusses the Oracle BI Special Interest Group

This year Glenn Hoormann of Optimum Solutions was elected chairperson of the Oracle Business Intelligence Special Interest Group (OBI SIG). At San Francisco-based Optimum Solutions, Hoormann helps provide world-class implementation and integration consulting services.

We recently sat down with Hoormann to discuss the mission of the OBI SIG, his group’s upcoming activities, and why his passion for BI has led him to take on the role of chairperson.

What is the mission of the OBI SIG?
Our mission is threefold. We work to promote education around Oracle’s BI solutions. We enable personal and professional networking specifically regarding Oracle BI. And we provide a forum for both Oracle and the user community to share lessons learned, best practices, implementation challenges, and potential value and benefits.

Tell us a little about its history.
OBI SIG was founded in the spring of 2007. At the time, Oracle solutions were moving up in the Gartner quadrant—and evolving at breakneck speed. But more than anything else, the group grew out of Oracle’s increasing market share. Suddenly there was a much bigger user community needing somewhere to go for Oracle-specific content, direction and vision, and networking.

Who are OBI SIG’s members?
The group includes both the user community as well as Oracle’s BI partners. Members range from C-level executives to developers, database administrators, and BI project managers. And they also represent everything from small to mid-market companies all the way up to Fortune 100 firms.

How can people join OBI SIG?
They just need to go to our site. It’s free, and there are essentially no prerequisites to join.

Tell us about some of the group’s upcoming Webcasts.
We have four Webcasts coming up. One will include overall direction and vision. Another will focus on integrating diverse Oracle BI EPM solutions. Finally, there will be live demos of the new Oracle Project Analytics product as well as Oracle HR Analytics.

What does OBI SIG have planned for Oracle OpenWorld?
We will offer a keynote about direction and vision. There will also be customer roundtable discussions and hands-on demonstrations—including ways to tie the various products together. However, our most popular event is usually the Ask the Experts panel, which includes customers, Oracle experts, and SIG board members.

What made you decide to take on this role?
I’ve had a passion for BI since the late 90s. I personally believe that BI is the way to get value out of your ERP system. You have captured all the data, and now you have to get it into a format that helps you make decisions and create value. And why Oracle? That’s pretty simple. Through its acquisition strategy and internal development, it now provides the most complete, end-to-end BI solution on the market.
