"Hot-Pluggable" Oracle Content Management Gets Even Hotter
Launched this April, Oracle Universal Content Management (formerly Stellent Universal Content Management) 10g Release 3 includes five key enhancements that significantly turn up the heat on Oracle's long-standing "hot-pluggable" approach to enterprise content management: out-of-the-box support for Oracle as well as third-party repositories, search, security systems, and enterprise applications.
The push for hot-pluggable integration complements Oracle's 2006 acquisition of content management leader Stellent. The result is a single, complete solution running on a unified platform with consistent user experiences, application programming interfaces (APIs), and repository and content services for all content types.
Microsoft SharePoint Integration
Many organizations use Microsoft SharePoint as a collaborative document creation tool but struggle to "promote" specific content items to a larger enterprise content management system. By including a new content promotion feature for Microsoft SharePoint, Oracle Universal Content Management 10g Release 3 makes this possible.
With new WebParts for Microsoft SharePoint, users can also access their workflow inbox, check in, and search and browse for Oracle Universal Content Management files—directly from the SharePoint interface.
Flexible Content Storage
Oracle Universal Content Management lets organizations manage any type of content within the repository, including native documents, executables, CAD drawings, and PDF, HTML, XML, flash, audio, and video files.
File Store Provider architecture—new in this release—gives organizations tremendous flexibility and granular control in determining how and where items are stored. Organizations can easily distribute files across multiple disk partitions, or store content in Oracle Database.
For maximum flexibility, this new architecture also allows organizations to create custom providers for non-Oracle storage management systems, such as NetApp, Fujitsu ETERNUS, and EMC Centera.
Enhanced Portal Integrations
With JSR 168–compliant portlets, Oracle Universal Content Management moves beyond the "push model," in which content is fed to the portal server for viewing. Users can easily check in, subscribe, and route content—and perform content administration—in real time through a portal interface.
In addition to integrations with BEA, IBM, and Sun portal servers, Oracle Universal Content Management now integrates with Oracle Application Server, Oracle Portal, and Oracle's next-generation portal server, Oracle WebCenter.
Content Conversion from Any Enterprise Application
Stellent led the content conversion market for years with its content refinery and Outside In technology. Oracle Universal Content Management builds on this tradition, enabling quick viewing and rapid Web publishing via conversion of native formats to PDF, TIF, HTML, and XML as well as multiple imaging and video formats.
Oracle Universal Content Management 10g Release 3 includes a content refinery that leverages a service-oriented architecture (SOA) to quickly create custom conversion options. And the conversion engine can be easily called from any application across the enterprise as a Web service.
Integration with Oracle Secure Enterprise Search
In addition to using several third-party search engines, Oracle Universal Content Management now includes a dedicated use license for Oracle Secure Enterprise Search. This means content managed by Oracle Universal Content Management can be indexed and accessed using Oracle Secure Enterprise Search at no extra charge. By acquiring addition licenses, customers can extend their Oracle Secure Enterprise Search deployments to access a wide variety of content management systems, databases, and enterprise applications from a single access point.
