Innovations in Oracle Site Studio 10gR4 Bring In-Context Editing and More
Innovations in the recently launched Oracle Site Studio 10gR4 represent a major milestone in Oracle's strategy to help organizations build Web sites with the greatest possible openness and flexibility.
By separating content, presentation, and page placement, Oracle Site Studio 10gR4 enables content to be displayed in any Web application—just by adding a single tag. Even more revolutionary, it also supports in-context editing simply by adding a tag in any Web application. Now developers can provide rich in-context editing in their applications, which can significantly speed and simplify contributions by nontechnical users.
"Want product managers to update a product catalog in-context? You got it. Want to enable HR to update the holiday schedule? No problem," says Alan Baer, director of product management, Oracle Universal Content Management.
Separating Content, Presentation, and Page Placement
Instead of "contribution regions" within a Web page, Oracle Site Studio 10gR4 relies on the far more flexible "placeholders" within a given page. The placeholder is then associated with a component that is formed by a "region definition" (content that a contributor might enter) and "region template" (the formatting of that content).
As a result, content is formatted before it even gets pulled into a page. And Oracle Site Studio 10gR4 components can accommodate a wide range of content types, including text, images, and multimedia objects like Flash.
"Placeholders allow contributors to assign or create content at a particular location. But placeholders can also take parameters, which allow you to manipulate them in interesting ways that would have been difficult with previous versions of Site Studio," explains Baer.
"These innovations really open up what you can do with Site Studio and allow people to be much more creative," adds Baer.
Breaking Down Barriers Between Web Apps and Web Sites
Until now, organizations building a Web site had to choose between building either a content-based Web site or a Web application that enables transactions and services.
Typically, this meant that existing Web applications had to be moved over to a new framework before they could take advantage of Web content management (WCM) capabilities. Otherwise, the Web application could take advantage of only a limited set of the WCM functionality provided by the tool.
Oracle Universal Content Management 10gR4 changes the equation by enabling content to be displayed in any Web application by adding a single tag. And with Oracle Site Studio 10gR4, the parameter for a placeholder can, for example, be the content ID of a data file.
That means contributors can create content within Oracle Universal Content Management and take advantage of all its management capabilities to ensure content quality.
