At Oracle OpenWorld 2008, Green Panel Measures Links Between Sustainability and ROI
As global concern about the environment continues to rise, attendees at September's Oracle OpenWorld 2008 conference showed unprecedented interest in green events, including the customer panel "Do You Really Need to Print That Document?"
Moderated by Brian Dirking, principal product director at Oracle, the panel revealed the connection between a measurable financial return on investment (ROI) and a measurable "environmental ROI" that can be quantified in terms of trees saved, barrels of oil conserved, and carbon emissions avoided.
Representatives from four businesses—Embry Riddle, Emerson Process, Standard Forwarding, and Swedish Medical Center—discussed some remarkable results they have achieved using Oracle Enterprise Content Management solutions.
Conservation in Unexpected Places
Emerson Process—a leading global supplier of products, services, and solutions that manage process-related operations—has saved more than $574,000 in paper costs and $158,000 in shipping costs using Oracle products.
"Those savings are amazing in themselves," says Dirking. "But the reduced environmental impact that those numbers represent is just as remarkable."
The environmental benefits are wider-ranging than might be imagined. In addition to fewer trees cut down to make paper, the solutions offer significant energy conservation related to, for example, shipping services and energy consumed to service storage facilities.
And by moving paper-based processes online, businesses can enable employees to work at home, thus reducing consumption related both to commuting as well as maintenance of office space.
How Many Trees? How Many Barrels of Oil?
To measure environmental ROI, Oracle has developed the Green Calculator, which converts reductions in paper consumption and shipping to the number of trees, barrels of oil, and pounds of carbon saved.
Using the Green Calculator, Dirking found that, for example, Emerson Process was able to save 3,779 trees, 2,704 barrels of oil, and 91,676 pounds of carbon simply by eliminating the printing and shipping of documents, thanks to Oracle Content Management solutions.
This session will be reprised as a Web seminar, as part of Oracle’s customer profile Web seminar series starting in November. This series will profile six customers and include a session on SharePoint integration, as well as the green panel. Learn more.
