Oracle’s Information Rights Management Tool Reaches Millionth Free Download
As organizations worldwide seek to secure sensitive digital content, Oracle Information Rights Management (IRM) Desktop—the agent software for Oracle's IRM solution—has now reached its millionth free download.
"As we reach this milestone, it's a reminder of how urgent the need for IRM has become—and also how many businesses and individuals have come to rely on Oracle to keep their most sensitive data safe," says Andy Peet, product manager, Oracle IRM.
What's IRM? Conventional information management products only secure data that remains stored within server-side repositories. But with the proliferation of e-mail, and now mobile wireless devices, such measures are proving woefully inadequate.
Oracle IRM (formerly SealedMedia) uses encryption to extend the management of information beyond the repository to every copy of an organization's most sensitive information, wherever it is stored and used—even outside the firewall.
With Oracle IRM, sensitive documents, e-mails and other data can be encrypted, or “sealed," associating each with a set of policies and thus preventing unauthorized viewing and providing a digital signature to defend against tampering. The easy-to-install IRM Desktop application enforces these policies on end-user systems, integrating seamlessly with the Windows environment and critical business applications such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Reader.
For example, a sales executive makes some final changes to a highly sensitive price list. From within Microsoft Word, she can quickly seal it, choosing to make it accessible only to key members of her sales team, including select partners outside the firewall.
When team members open the document, IRM Desktop recognizes that they have been granted permissions and unseals the document. However, if anyone forwards the document on to others without permissions, the document remains "sealed," or encrypted, and cannot be opened.
Other key features of Oracle IRM include easy integration into existing applications and workflows; transparent support for revocable, offline work; auditing; centralized rights management based on existing processes and employee role; industry-standard cryptography; watermarks and screen-grab protection; and more.
"And now," Peet adds, "Oracle is working to embed Oracle IRM Desktop directly within Microsoft Office to make the user experience even more seamless."
