Ian Abramson’s Top COLLABORATE 09 IOUG Sessions for Stretching IT Dollars

Developers and DBAs looking to stretch their training dollars and learn more efficient practices should not miss the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG) Forum at the COLLABORATE 09 conference, May 3-7 in Orlando, Florida.

“The contacts and quality of education you get at this event is unbeatable,” says IOUG President Ian Abramson. “You get experience-based teaching from peers who’ve already been through the kinds of projects you’re considering, and you also get access to the world’s leading experts on the technology you rely on.”

Here are five sessions Abramson recommends as well as his take on why they’re important:

Migration: Migrating to [Oracle Database] 11g – Step-Ordered Approach, Led by April Sims of Southern Utah University. Says Abramson: “To get the best new cost-savings technologies, people are going to have to upgrade to Oracle Database 11g. Here you can learn a step-by-step approach from someone who recently migrated.”

DBA best practices: Ask Tom Kyte Live! An all-day session led by Kyte. Says Abramson: “What’s the value of being able to sit with a guy like Tom Kyte for a whole day and ask him your questions? Just this day alone could pay for your whole week.”

Security: SANS University Seminar: Securing Oracle. An all-day session led by a member of the IT security think tank. Says Abramson: “The information in this session is a direct result of a security survey that IOUG carried out earlier this year. It provides the exact security education that our members have asked for.”

Real Application Clusters: Performance Tuning in RAC, led by Arup Nanda of Starwood Hotels. Says Abramson: “RAC is emerging as a very exciting mainstream technology and it’s important to embrace it. Nanda is one of the top DBAs in the world and he is going to come with very specific recommendations that work in his large database.”

Cost saving new features: Oracle Database 11g New Features led by Rich Niemiec of TUSC, Inc. Says Abramson: “You need a clear understanding of what’s in the newest release if you’re going to take advantage the availability and cost-saving features it holds. There’s no one better at this than Niemiec.”

Don’t just take Abramson’s word for it. Check out all the sessions on the IOUG Web site.
