Highest Performance, Lowest Cost: A New Equation for SMBs

For years the database industry has placed emphasis on high-end benchmarks with a primary metric of absolute performance. By that measure, Oracle and HP hold the world record in the TPC-C absolute performance category, with more than four million transactions per minute. Recent results, however, show that Oracle’s commitment to small and medium businesses (SMBs) and Linux is paying off for customers and partners. For SMBs, Oracle now provides the highest performance at the lowest cost.

In the latest TPC-C benchmark, Oracle Database Standard Edition One and Oracle Enterprise Linux on an HP ProLiant ML350 server set a new world record for price/performance, delivering the best price per transaction per minute ever achieved for a TPC-C benchmark. “Oracle has become both the fastest database and value leader,” says Oracle senior vice president, Systems Technology, Juan Loaiza. “Oracle Database Standard Edition One not only provides customers with a highly performant, fully functional, scalable data management solution but also delivers unparalleled cost savings with record-breaking performance.”

Unbeatable for Small and Medium Business
This new world-record price/performance TPC-C benchmark delivered by Oracle and HP surpasses Microsoft SQL Server, with 45 percent more performance at 14 percent less cost. This benchmark announcement is the latest of many proof points and third-party reports comparing Oracle’s performance, price, and manageability with the competition. In 2006, an independent Comparative Management Cost Study from the Edison Group proved that Oracle Database 10g offers superior manageability, resulting in significant advantages and cost savings over Microsoft SQL Server 2005. According to the Edison group, typical DBA functions are 38 percent faster on Oracle Database 10g and require 30 percent fewer steps. Edison Group estimated that the reduced complexity of Oracle Database could save more than $30,000 per DBA per year.

eWeek magazine provided yet another independent perspective on the relative manageability of Oracle Database and SQL Server 2005. After evaluating the two products in its labs, eWeek ranked the manageability of Oracle Database 10g as “excellent,” as opposed to just “good” for Microsoft SQL Server.

“These benchmark results and independent evaluations signify a new opportunity for price-sensitive SMBs and departments,” says Loaiza. “The combination of Oracle Database performance, new processor-based pricing for Oracle Database Standard Edition One, and Oracle Enterprise Linux with Unbreakable Linux support provides an unbeatable platform for their needs.”

TPC-C Test Details
To set the new TPC-C price performance record, Oracle Database 10g Release 2 Standard Edition One was run on an HP ProLiant ML350 server with one Intel Quad-Core Xeon 2.6GHz processor and HP StorageWorks. The operating system used was Oracle Enterprise Linux, which is fully compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and supported under the Oracle Unbreakable Linux program. Oracle’s result: 100,926 transactions per minute with a price/performance of $.78/tpmC. Together, Oracle and HP delivered the best price per transaction per minute ever achieved for a TPC-C benchmark. Learn more from the Oracle press release.
