The Blazingly Fast Just Got Faster: Oracle Releases Berkeley
DB 4.6

Oracle Berkeley DB, Oracle's open source embeddable database, has always delivered extreme, lights-out performance to the applications and devices that embed it. Now, with a fresh round of enhancements, Oracle Berkeley DB 4.6 is even faster. The new release also includes improved portability and new features to simplify development.

Increased Performance
Oracle Berkeley DB 4.6 improves performance and concurrency, especially in the multicore and multi-CPU systems common in today's servers. Enhancements include a more efficient mutex implementation that improves performance as multiple cores try to access a common memory location. The new release also introduces a faster hash access method to help applications quickly find a desired item via a binary search, which can dramatically improve performance for large databases.

Ease-of-Use for Developers
A new quick-start tool in Oracle Berkeley DB 4.6 generates schema and configuration code that reduces coding errors and helps developers' produce working applications on their first try. Several new features have been added that give developers greater flexibility and control for their applications, including cache size adjustment during runtime, cache operation prioritization, and replica-private temporary databases.

Portability Across New Platforms
While Oracle Berkeley DB is very popular embedded within a broad range of applications, including enterprise software, networking equipment and devices, and major Web sites, the small-footprint database is finding new converts in the mobile device industry. In response, release 4.6 offers new support for Windows CE, S60—common in Nokia and other smartphones—and BREW, a runtime environment for CDMA mobile handsets.

Oracle acquired the Oracle Berkeley DB open source database technology in February 2006. Since then, customers and partners continue to adopt Oracle Berkeley DB for mission-critical applications, and Oracle continues to invest in ongoing development, support, and go-to-market activities for Berkeley DB.

Availability and Pricing
Oracle Berkeley DB Release 4.6 is generally available under a dual license. A no-cost open source license permits redistribution if the application using Oracle Berkeley DB is open source. A commercial license is available for redistribution of proprietary applications.
