Executive Corner: Oracle’s Next-Generation Portal Strategy Offers Flexibility and Efficiency
As planning for 2009 heats up, the focus on getting more out of existing systems and workforces is top of mind for IT leaders. Portals and user interaction may not be recognized as one of the areas of greatest IT impact—but it’s definitely one of the most visible.
Cost control, user productivity, and innovation figure prominently in Oracle’s portal and user interaction strategy. “Portals are all about leveraging your legacy investments instead of replacing them,” says Rahul Patel, vice president of portals and user interaction development at Oracle. “They enable higher productivity by integrating applications, business processes, and business documents into one environment.”
The addition of BEA products increases not only the impact of that strategy but the resources available to deliver on that strategy—which includes Oracle WebCenter Suite as the cornerstone.
The Power of One
Oracle’s portal strategy is to deliver a common, unified portal framework in Oracle WebCenter Suite that meets the evolving needs of Oracle’s portal, middleware, and applications customers by providing flexibility in feature sets and creating a single place for integrating and accessing resources, including:
- Enterprise applications
- Business processes
- Content and business documents
- Web 2.0 and social networking
“That means better productivity and more productive customer interactions for your business,” says Patel. For IT, the goal of Oracle’s portal and user interaction strategy is to give customers more flexibility using their existing portal investments, provide a foundation for technology-driven business innovation, and cut costs and save time by adhering to industry standards.
As you review your IT priorities for 2009, you may want to consider the above strategies and the following important points.
BEA Customers, It’s Your Choice
Oracle will continue individual product enhancements, assures no forced product migrations, and offers BEA customers investment protection by providing interoperability across the interfaces used in BEA portals.
Improved User Experience and Productivity
Delivering Web 2.0 capabilities in a portal environment improves user experiences, optimizes business processes, and leverages an organization’s collective intelligence. In addition to Web 2.0 capabilities in WebCenter Suite, organizations can extend existing portal environments with out-of-the-box Web 2.0 functionality in Oracle WebCenter Services.
Standards Leadership
Oracle embraces industry standards, such as JSR 168/286 and WSRP, for interoperability among systems and is a leader in the establishment of open standards in the portal community.
