Application Server Strategy Gets Big BEA Boost

Oracle's July 1 strategy announcement Webcast included big news for both BEA and Oracle customers with an interest in application performance and scale. The addition of Oracle WebLogic Server (formerly BEA WebLogic Server) as the foundation of Oracle's application server product line provides Oracle customers with the fastest and most scalable infrastructure for developing, deploying, and integrating enterprise applications. Oracle customers will also benefit from Oracle Tuxedo, the most highly available distributed transaction processing platform in the world.

Oracle WebLogic Server is widely recognized as the industry's No. 1 application server, based on scalability, reliability, and performance. Thomas Kurian, Oracle senior vice president of development, also announced the availability of Oracle WebLogic Suite in the broadcast. Oracle WebLogic Suite combines WebLogic Server with Oracle Application Server and additional performance-enhancing products such as Oracle JRockit and Oracle Coherence. Oracle Application Server customers will benefit from ongoing development and Oracle's commitment to integrate its best capabilities with Oracle WebLogic Server over time. Oracle Tuxedo (formerly BEA Tuxedo) also received a significant boost in resources through the retention of key BEA development centers and will complement Oracle WebLogic Server for transaction processing capabilities.

"We are excited about how these latest offerings bring to market some truly leading-edge developments in application server technology, such as in-memory data grid, a real-time JVM, and adaptive application control," said Mike Piech, senior director of product marketing, Oracle.

Oracle also rolled out Oracle WebLogic Application Grid, an extreme scale-out grid platform for predictable scalability and ultra-high performance. Oracle WebLogic Application Grid consists of Oracle Coherence Grid Edition, Oracle JRockit Real Time, Oracle WebLogic Operations Control, and Oracle Enterprise Manager Diagnostics Pack.

Developer Tools

During the broadcast Oracle President Charles Phillips noted that the combination of the two Java powerhouses has pushed the Oracle Java community to the 1 million member mark. Following the Webcast, a SearchSOA.com article featuring an interview with industry analyst Dana Gardner, principal analyst of Interarbor Solutions LLC, said, "With BEA now under Oracle's wing and going through an integration process, I think we can pretty clearly state that Oracle is the number one Java supplier."

Kurian reiterated Oracle's Fusion Middleware development tool strategy, with additional support for the Eclipse community. Oracle continues to offer a complete and integrated development toolset, founded on Oracle JDeveloper and free to the development community, and Oracle ADF to substantially improve developer productivity while preserving choice across development styles and deployment platforms. For developers using Eclipse, Oracle also introduced the Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, which offers Oracle's Eclipse contributions—including add-ins to support Java JPA development, Enterprise Java Bean modeling, business process modeling, and database modeling, as well as BEA Workshop components that were built on top of Eclipse.
