Acquisition Pumps Up Portals with Enterprise 2.0 Technologies

Oracle executives Charles Phillips and Thomas Kurian reiterated the importance of Enterprise 2.0 in the July 1 BEA Welcome and Middleware Strategy Briefing Webcast. SVP Kurian highlighted the completeness, openness, and manageability of the Oracle Enterprise 2.0 and portal products, which benefit from the addition of innovative BEA technologies. During the briefing, Oracle announced the new Oracle WebCenter Suite, which combines Oracle WebCenter and Oracle WebCenter Interaction (formerly BEA AquaLogic User Interaction). WebCenter Suite puts Enterprise 2.0 technologies front and center, allowing organizations to securely deliver services like wikis, discussion forums, and RSS feeds through both out-of-the-box and customized portals.

Kurian also explored the new Oracle WebCenter Services, which provides standards-based components that enrich existing portals and Web sites. "Because both the Oracle and BEA portal products were based on open standards, our joint customers now have the choice of adding Enterprise 2.0 capabilities to their existing deployments today by installing WebCenter Services or creating new, rich user experiences using WebCenter Suite," says Greg Crider, director of product marketing, Oracle.

Oracle plans to continue to develop and support Oracle WebLogic Portal and Oracle Portal, and expects to converge these products with Oracle's strategic solutions over time. Existing deployments of these products will benefit from complementary products such as Oracle WebCenter Services and Oracle Content Management.

"The biggest takeaway from the strategy briefing for many customers must have been Thomas Kurian's assurance that Oracle will support and enhance the BEA portal products for years to come and that there will be no forced product migrations ... ever, period, end of story," says Crider.
