Hands-on SOA Labs for Oracle Applications a Huge Hit at Collaborate 08

Oracle customers turned out in force at this year's Collaborate conference to learn how to service-enable their Oracle applications. More than 550 participants in three days participated in hands-on labs and thousands more are expected to take advantage of new online best practice centers that demonstrate how to use Oracle Fusion Middleware to service enable Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle's PeopleSoft, Oracle's Siebel, and Oracle's JD Edwards Enterprise One applications.

"People want to learn to create better access to their applications and improve integration between their systems using our SOA technology," says Juliana Button, Director of Product Management and an instructor in the labs. "In these lessons, we showed them how easy it is to do."

No More Mystery
In the hands-on lab for Oracle E-Business Suite, for example, students took an order from a legacy system and passed it through to Oracle E-Business Suite. "It's pretty amazing," says Button. "Students come in knowing very little about the technology, and by the end of the class they have used our SOA tools to build a new process. They can see their order moved into Oracle E-Business Suite."

"When they see that [Oracle] E-Business Suite adapter is a simple drag-and-drop object in our BPEL design time tool in [Oracle] JDeveloper," says Button, "the light goes on and they say ‘hey, this is what service enabling is all about'."

According to Button, students want to return to their jobs and begin delivering the flexibility and cost savings of service-oriented architecture (SOA). "They want to speed up initial development and also bring down the cost of application upgrades," she says. "Customers have to upgrade every two to three years, and every time it costs them around 20 percent of what it cost them to launch the application in the first place," says Button. "Our SOA customers have told us that they save 15 percent to 40 percent on the upgrade process. That's one of the big reasons people are coming to our labs."

Best Practice Centers
"We have just launched our Oracle Fusion Middleware for applications best practices centers for Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle's Siebel, and Oracle's PeopleSoft on the Oracle Technology Network," says Button. "People will find information about getting started as well as a comprehensive set of hands-on tutorials in which people can step through a set of screen shots and work through examples. We're also involving partners that are going through implementations themselves. They will contribute best practices as they learn them. These best practices centers are really a community project."
