Oracle Plans New Tool for Optimizing Global Supply Chains

In the ongoing effort to reduce costs and increase global supply chain efficiency, manufacturers are turning conventional wisdom inside out. The goal: gather and analyze more data outside their factory walls as part of a growing industry strategy known as performance-driven manufacturing.

"We're seeing new thinking about how companies are looking at traditional supply chains, and in turn, new products are coming on the market that will help manufacturers run their businesses more profitably," says Stephen Slade, senior director, Oracle applications and industries marketing.

One of the more anticipated products expected for next year is Oracle's Manufacturing Operations Center, which will offer a set of analytics and contextualization tools that turn raw shop floor and enterprise resource planning (ERP) data into easily understood business metrics, such as work order and customer order schedules. It will also help facilitate closer integration between CRM, ERP and shop floor processes.

The benefits promise to stretch beyond the factory walls by providing information for streamlining global supply chains. "It starts with a plan to set higher standards of collaboration and information exchange among all supply chain partners," Slade explains. "Manufacturers will be able to gain new visibility into global operations to see opportunities in shifting regional markets using the Manufacturing Operations Center, Oracle Strategic Network Optimization for determining the best sourcing strategies, and Oracle Sales and Operations Planning for demand management and other important areas."

The underlying analytics infrastructure provided by the Manufacturing Operations Center conforms to best practices for running Lean and Six Sigma Continuous Improvement programs, he adds.
