Oracle Launches Its First Cloud Computing Products and Services

As the concept of cloud computing sweeps the industry, Oracle announced on September 22 that customers can license Oracle Database 11g, Oracle Fusion Middleware, and Oracle Enterprise Manager to run in a cloud computing environment.

The next logical step after grid and utility computing, cloud computing essentially delivers supercomputing power with very little capital expenditure on hardware by creating a network (or “cloud”) of virtual servers all connected by the Internet, much like the on-demand, or software-as-a-service (SaaS), model.

“Providing choice is the foundation of Oracle's strategy—from hardware and operating systems to on-demand computing," says Robert Shimp, Oracle vice president, technology marketing. "It's a natural evolution for us to extend this strategy to the cloud environment."

Amazon EC2

Oracle's first cloud computing release is designed to work within the Amazon Web Services Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) environment.

Amazon EC2 presents a true virtual computing environment, enabling developers to requisition hardware resources via a Web services interface. They can then load those resources within a custom application environment, manage their network's access permissions, and run their cloud solution using as many or as few systems as necessary.

Customers can also use their existing software licenses on EC2. Those customers with Unlimited License Agreements (ULA) can run on EC2 with no additional license fees.

Up and Running in Minutes

To get customers up and running quickly and efficiently, Oracle is delivering a set of free Amazon Machine Images (AMIs). Using these AMIs, new virtual machines can be provisioned with Oracle Database 11g, Oracle Fusion Middleware, and Oracle Enterprise Linux—all fully configured and ready to use within minutes.

Developers can also take advantage of provisioning and automated software deployment to rapidly build applications using Oracle's popular development tools such as Oracle Application Express.

In addition, Oracle Unbreakable Linux Support is available for Oracle Enterprise Linux on EC2.

Cloud-Based Backup

Oracle also introduced Oracle Secure Backup Cloud Module, based on Oracle Secure Backup—Oracle’s tape backup management software—which enables customers to use Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) as their off-site database backup destination.

The Oracle Secure Backup Cloud Module also enables encrypted data backups to help ensure complete privacy in the cloud environment. It integrates seamlessly with Oracle Recovery Manager and Oracle Enterprise Manager, so users can leverage familiar interfaces for a straightforward transition path to cloud-based backups.
