Green Report: Black Book of Outsourcing Gives Oracle High Marks
In its 2009 Green Outsourcing Survey, Black Book Research gives Oracle one of the highest rankings in the industry for its leadership in green initiatives.
Among global information technology vendors, Oracle ranked third in the world for its green innovations, according to the survey. Among North American IT outsourcing vendors, Oracle ranked second. And among outsourcing providers in all industries, Oracle ranked sixth in the world.
Brown-Wilson Group and Black Book Research conducts the annual survey of pro-environmental initiatives of outsourcing service providers. Rankings are based on results from more than 30,000 outsourcing customers, representing more than 95 countries and a broad range of industries.
Among 12 key performance indicators, respondents were asked to evaluate the outsourcers’ efforts to
- Reduce carbon imprint of client towards zero impact
- Develop new green technologies, products, and services that reduce waste, conserve energy, and increase efficiency of resources
- Voluntarily establish standards of sustainability for clients that are higher than those imposed by the industry
- Manifest successful green strategies that progress over the term of the agreements
Green Inside Out
Oracle environmental leadership begins with its own operations, from its ISO 14001 facility in Reading, U.K., to the green initiatives at its annual OpenWorld conference.
In addition, Oracle’s new data center in Utah is expected to use half the energy of Oracle's Austin Data Center -- which itself uses about half the energy of comparable facilities.
Besides its own internal initiatives, Oracle provides critical support to its customers in their own efforts as environmental stewards, including
- Business applications to manage environmental compliance, green supply chains, and more
- Green content management
- Green data center practices for database, middleware, and systems management
- Sustainability reporting, planning, and management
