Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Release 3 Offers Midsize Companies True Top-Down Application Management
With its release in March, Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Release 3 becomes the first solution that enables true top-down application management, including not just applications themselves but the entire technology stack—middleware, database, networks, and hardware.
For small and medium organizations with limited IT resources, the potential benefits are clear. By monitoring and managing configurations and service levels, proactively isolating business exceptions before they escalate, and diagnosing and solving issues at any level of the IT stack, Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Release 3 helps organizations keep systems up and running optimally while minimizing the impact on overburdened IT teams.
Designed for Heterogeneous Environments
Traditionally, systems management has been limited to individual components in the data center. This worked well in the days of monolithic applications, where all application and infrastructure components resided on a single big mainframe or SMP box.
However, today's midsize companies rely increasingly on modular applications, grid computing, and service-oriented architecture (SOA)—often representing a huge range of providers.
Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Release 3 addresses this new reality by providing tools to manage the entire infrastructure—and not only for Oracle systems, but for all systems under which Oracle and custom-built applications run.
"You can have 100 or 150 different applications running across a hospital," says Michael Simpson, CTO and SVP at McKesson, the leading healthcare IT company in the United States.
"With [Oracle] Enterprise Manager, we now have the ability to monitor not only McKesson systems but other third-party systems in that environment to know when a third-party system is down," says Simpson. "We can manage the continuum of care in a whole new way."
Application-Centric Solution
According to Oracle President Charles Phillips, only Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Release 3 can provide "an application-centric view, actively manage applications for particular level of performance, and help with the physical lifecycle management of an application as it changes over time."
In practice, that means midsize companies can minimize confusion and speed resolution by pinpointing business exceptions and then drilling down to the root cause.
"The top-down management approach... is a sea-change from what's out there in the industry today," adds Richard Sarwal, Oracle's senior vice president of applications and system management products.
