Oracle Database Standard Edition One on Linux Sets World Record

Designed specifically for midsize companies, Oracle Database Standard Edition One has set a world record for price and performance during a recent benchmark conducted by the independent Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC).

According to the TPC, Oracle's benchmark offered 45 percent more performance than its nearest competitor—and at 14 percent lower cost. This result includes the cost of world-class support available through the Oracle Unbreakable Linux support program, making Oracle Database Standard Edition One running Linux a very affordable, very powerful platform for midsize companies.

"For years, the database industry has tended to emphasize absolute performance, whatever the cost," says Willie Hardie, vice president, Oracle Database Product Marketing. "By that measure, Oracle and HP hold the world record in the absolute performance category with more than 4 million transactions per minute.

"But now, for the first time, Oracle Database Standard Edition One is also the most affordable offering of its kind," adds Hardie. "We even beat Microsoft on its strongest selling point — affordability."

The Fine Print
For the TPC-C (online transaction processing) benchmark, Oracle Database 10g Standard Edition One Release 2 and Oracle Enterprise Linux ran on an HP ProLiant ML350 — a system ideally suited to midsize companies.

The system performed a blistering 100,926 transactions per minute, achieving a price/performance ratio of $.78/tpmC.

"For midsize companies, the value offered is unparalleled," says Hardie. "But these numbers also prove that Oracle's commitment to both to Linux and to midsize companies is paying really off for customers."

But Wait, There's More...
Remarkably, the cost base used in the TPC-C benchmark already factored in the cost of Oracle Unbreakable Linux, a program that provides industry-leading global support for the Linux operating system.

Linux, an open-source operating system, is increasingly popular with cost-conscious midsize companies, and Oracle Unbreakable Linux delivers the highest-quality support at the lowest cost.

Oracle Unbreakable Linux support subscribers receive access to patches, fixes, security alerts, and back ports. Get more information.
