Oracle Application Express Now Delivers One-Click Printing
The latest version of the popular Oracle Application Express, Release 3.0, now lets business users print professional-looking reports, including charts and other visual aids— answering the long-standing need for professional, flexible printing.
“Historically applications haven’t printed well,” says David Peake, product manager of Oracle Application Express. “Generally, users have had to settle for cumbersome print screen versions, or migrate data into a separate printing tool.”
“But [Oracle] BI Publisher and [Oracle] Application Express 3.0 change the equation,” says Peake. “Now you can produce professional-looking reports very quickly and easily.”
Oracle Application Express 3.0 applications, engineered to move fast-growing businesses quickly and easily from traditional spreadsheets to database-centric Web applications, are available as free downloads from Oracle Technology Network.
More Flexibility, Greater Control
Oracle Application Express 3.0 introduces the ability to export a report region as a PDF. As a result, users can instantly print content that has consistent page headings and conforms to multiple page sizes.
However, high-fidelity printing is not limited only to PDF. Oracle Business Intelligence Publisher can also generate Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and HTML output.
In addition, developers can also build RTF-based templates that provide significantly greater control over control breaks, headers, and footers—plus the ability to embed charts and other images.
Faster Printing, Faster Time to Value
Often, when organizations implement new applications, printing comes last on the list of concerns. And yet even in the internet age, printed reports remain a key decision-making tool.
“In the past, users had to become proficient with multiple tools—or engage in a lot of trial and error—to create effective printed reports,” says Peake.
But with Oracle Business Intelligence Publisher, developers can build RTF templates using the Word plug-in provided, and then upload the template directly into Oracle Application Express applications.
“This makes it much faster and easier than printing tools that involve proprietary design techniques—or else working in an interface that is neither intuitive nor WYSIWYG,” says Peake.
“With [Oracle] BI Publisher, you can quickly build a true end-to-end solution—and therefore speed return on your investment,” Peake adds.
Finally, Oracle Business Intelligence Publisher is a fully supported product. “That means that if users run into issues, they can call Oracle Support and get help on both [Oracle] BI Publisher and [Oracle] Application Express right away,” says Peake.
