Content Management and Database Management: A New Information Architecture

A new report by IDC illuminates how content management and data management are coming together in a more-comprehensive information architecture that will allow easier deployment of content-enabled applications. To that point, IDC sees Oracle as well positioned to play a leading role in the evolution of content management solutions.

The report predicts that Oracle Content Database and Oracle Records Database, which are database product add-ons, will change the dynamic of the information infrastructure market in the following ways:

  • Companies will leverage existing investments in Oracle's database management services to achieve greater access and control over content throughout its lifecycle.
  • With content management capabilities integrated within an Oracle Database, ISVs may begin replacing proprietary code with Oracle's add-on offerings, such as Oracle Content Database.
  • Oracle offers a more-unified approach than competing technologies for handling structured and unstructured content.
  • Oracle provides an opportunity for its existing database users to leverage their current database infrastructure to meet evolving regulatory requirements.

The IDC report believes Oracle Content Database and Oracle Records Database will attract attention from DBAs, architects, and information management professionals eager to align their company's data management strategy with Oracle's strategic product direction. The report concludes that Oracle—in addition to its database, application stack, and large partner ecosystem—is ideally positioned to integrate content and records management services across its broad application portfolio.
