Oracle Announces Embedded Database Strategy and Road Map

Oracle will continue its commitment to offering the broadest selection of databases that can be embedded within software applications, devices, and equipment. Through a combination of acquisitions and internal development, Oracle continues to deliver strategic innovation to its portfolio of embeddable products.

Oracle Database 10g—This award-winning, relational database can be configured as an embedded database with no human administration.

Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database—This real-time, in-memory relational database is targeted at the middle tier to support the data management needs of performance-critical applications. Future releases include plans for greater compatibility and interoperability with Oracle Database.

Oracle Berkeley DB—This family of three high-performance, open source, embeddable databases saw new versions of Oracle Berkeley DB and Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition released in September 2006, and Oracle Berkeley DB XML 2.3 was released in December 2006.

Oracle Database Lite—This complete, integrated environment builds, deploys, and manages mobile applications for a broad range of devices. Oracle Database Lite includes a compact, relational database for mobile devices, and a mobile server for synchronization with Oracle Database, application provisioning, and device management. Future releases include plans for enhanced synchronization and support for a broader range of platforms.

By embedding these Oracle databases within their products, independent software vendors and original equipment manufacturers can deliver more-complete turnkey solutions with lower total cost of ownership for users.

"Motorola embeds Oracle software in more than 20 products, ranging from our Ming Smartphone to our innovative biometric and identity management solutions," said Mark Davies, vice president of enterprise strategy and business development for Motorola. "We look forward to our ongoing collaboration with Oracle to bring integrated solutions to market."

"As intelligent devices multiply, networks accelerate, and data volumes expand, there will be a growing need for embedded databases that run in a lights-out, always-on environment with no administration," said Rex Wang, vice president of embedded systems marketing at Oracle. "Oracle is committed to providing customers and partners with the broadest selection of embedded databases to meet the diverse technical requirements of the market."
